(CBS) LANCASTER, Calif. An "unstable" 25-year-old woman who was being questioned by deputies about a stolen vehicle apparently "panicked" and drove off in the officer's SUV.
The woman stole the SUV about 9:20 a.m., Sgt. Paul Patterson of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau said.
The deputy left the engine running while talking to the woman, and she got in and drove off, Patterson said.
Shortly before 11 a.m., the woman ran over a police spike strip and lost her back left tire.
Authorities managed to contact her over the patrol vehicle's radio, Patterson said.
Deputy Oscar Butao said the woman was "unstable" and crying. She was "screaming" into the vehicle's communications radio and had asked to contact her boyfriend and mother.
Investigators were able to talk to the woman and calm her down, Patterson said.
The woman was taken into custody about 11:15 a.m.
