I think back in WW2 it learning to adjust to the 'we were there"'s and the new guys went something like
"This is how we did it in Guadalcanal so STFU!!"
"Yes Sergeant"

I'd guess that's pretty much how it went in the days prior to WW2, and hasn't changed much at all since WW2.
