Re: Coffee and a book

Last book I read: Brave Men, Ernie Pyle -- a classic that introduces you to the Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen of the Sicily and Italy campaigns, and then to England and into France and to Paris. (Ernie Pyle was a well known war correspondant who followed the American forces through North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and Normandy. After the liberation of Paris, he returned to the States and eventually shipped out to the Pacific. He was killed by a sniper on Ie-Shima island of northwestern Okinawa.) Ernie continues to tell the story of the war by telling the stories of the "GI" - not the campaigns, officers, or heroes... though many of the people he meets are truly heroes. Don't read this book looking for a campaign history. Read it to understand who the American GI was and what they went through, especially those who worked in units outside the infantry.

Currently reading: Beyond Band of Brothers, Dick Winters
