Hey Bruno -- "Former Marine" indicates no longer on service. While you are always a Marine, we use "former" to indicate those who no longer wear the uniform, even though they may still wear the title "Marine".
The big faux pas is to say "Ex-Marine". The only ex-Marines out there are those either with a dishonorable discharge or still serving time at Fort Leavenworth.
It's okay to refer to an old man as a former Marine, but call him an ex-Marine and he'll get try to beat you with his cane.
