In the old Corps, that SNCO would have been written up and standing before the skipper for leaving HIS post and for bringing his duty sidearm off base without orders and if he were the sncoic of the guard and left his post with out orders, unless he was the general's son, it would be a one way ticket to Portsmouth.
PFC's are expected to do stupid things SNCO's are NOT.
