Left column states:
Tactical Air Control Party, Air Support Operations
Center, and Army Support Weather Personnel
Corresponding Column on the Right says:
Wear the patch and awarded qualification tab, i.e., Ranger, of the
Army unit currently aligned, on left shoulder of the BDU. Personnel
who serve in combat with an Army unit and are awarded the combat
patch may wear the patch on the right shoulder of the BDU when
aligned with and supporting the Army. Center patches and tab, with
the tab on top, on the appropriate sleeve, 1/4 inch below the shoulder
and sleeve seam. Senior NCOs may make minor adjustments in the
placement of stripes to accommodate the shoulder sleeve insignia.
Stripes may not extend below the bend in the elbow when arm bent
at 90-degree angle. Stripes on both sleeves must be worn in the same
location.
Technically a person that is at a AF level staff position can not wear a combat patch, but not to many people worry about it because as long as they are a ROMAD they will wear it. There is a supplemental reg which addresses the wear of our P.T.
gear and it defines who in what positions are authorized to wear a combat patch above the ASOG level.
What was the SMSgt's Name. I was an eighty-duece guy as well. I think I may know who you are talking about.
An ASOG is an Air Support Operations Group. There are 5 of them. One on the east coast, central us, west coast, germany and PACAF. The ASOG's pretty much mirror the Army main manuver corps. I.E. the 18th ASOG supports the 18th Airborne Corps, the 1st ASOG supports the 1st Corps. They only exception is Korea, the 607th ASOG supports the ROK and Hawaii. The 3rd ASOG supports the Alaska guys.
Under the ASOG's are ASOS's and OL's. The 18th ASOG has 6 ASOS's. Drum (20th ASOS), Campbell (19th ASOS), Bragg (14th ASOS), Stewart (15th ASOS), Benning (17th ASOS), and Polk (21st ASOS). The OL's are the guys that support the SOF units 3rd & 7th SFG, 160th SOAR, Rangers etc.
Ask away. Also if someone in the AF gives you a line of shit that they are wearing black jump wings instead of the blue ones, smack them once for me and a second time for being dumb. There is no regulatuion, or blurb in any regulation that states that if you graduate from the Army static line course that you must wear the black jump wings. It does state that that in order to wear jump wings you must do the following, complete the course (DUH), and remain a volunteer to fill a jump billet or served/jumped for atleast 36 months (can be cumulative). Plus if they have done the 36 months they are required by reg to wear it, it is considered an aeronautical badge.
Also if one of your studs is wearing a Pathfinder or Air Assault badge (a.k.a Bull Winkle Badge), they need to remove that as well.
The AFI specifically states :
..... only while performing duties with other Service air assault, pathfinder, ......
So as a JTAC aligned with the 82nd/14th ASOS, I can wear both because they perform both duties.
