FORT BRAGG, N.C. (USASOC News Service, Feb. 4, 2005) — An Army Special Forces student in language training here died Feb. 3 after he was involved in a domestic-related triple shooting in an off-post community near Fort Bragg.
Spc. Richard T. Corcoran, 34, a Special Forces trainee assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Warfare Training Group (Airborne) here, allegedly shot his estranged wife and another Soldier at a Cumberland County residence before shooting and killing himself at about 8:40 p.m.
Local civilian authorities are investigating the incident.
The injured Soldier, who is also assigned to the U.S. Army Special Operations Command here, remains hospitalized locally in stable condition. Corcoran’s estranged wife was treated and released from a local hospital, according to a statement released by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
Corcoran was still training to become a fully qualified Special Forces Soldier.
Corcoran, a native of Glen Ridge, N.J., entered the Army in June 2000 as a power generation equipment repairer. After completing Basic Combat Training at Fort Knox, Ky., and Advanced Individual Training at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., he was assigned to Fort Bragg in January 2001.
After a brief stint at the 82nd Airborne Division, he was assigned as a support Soldier to the 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), also at Fort Bragg, and served with that unit until August 2003, when he was selected for Special Forces training and transferred to the 1st SWTG.
While with the 7th SFG, Corcoran deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
His awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Parachutist Badge.
Corcoran is survived by his father, Richard E. Corcoran, of Glen Ridge, N.J.
