The only NCO's I have ever seen wear the stetson were first sergeants and the command sergeant major. These were usually only because they had to be around all the officers for the functions they were atending. Cav mom I would say that the best thing you can get for him is an original era replica of a CAV sabor. Have it mounted in a case with an engraving. He may be given one of these as a departing gift from a unit but that will only be after he becomes a senior NCO. I know it would mean a lot to him. If you want to go all out get a replication bugle and neck scarf (cant remember the propor name) have them all mounted together in a display case.
