Then he was cut along with just about everyone else not standing in the first three positions of each line. Exceptions were made for several people who did not pass APFT and one in particular will get a retest. Is this the usual way a class is determined? If he has a contract, doesn't that at least keep him at RIP until he fails a test? Can someone enlighten me?

People are not dropped from RIP based on where they stand in a line. Anyone that tells you that is crazy. This is the typical BS the quitters tell their parents/wives /girlfriends because they are ashamed of being a quitter. It is not uncommon for 65-70% of a course to quit. The graduation rate is at times as low as 10%. If someone quits or fails to meet the standards for graduation, their records are reviewed by the RIP Cadre. Some students, depending upon a variety of conditions, are offered the chance to recycle into the next class. The RIP Cadre have a very specific set of rules they must follow in dealing with students and their evaluation as potential members of the 75th Ranger Regiment. They simply do not operate that way you described. More than likely, the person you described above is using this story to save face.
