PRESS RELEASE: PSYOP Soldier dies in accident

U.S. Army Special Operations Command Public Affairs Office

FORT BRAGG, N.C. (USASOC News Service, Oct. 15, 2005) — An Army Psychological Operations Soldier stationed here died Oct. 14 after a non-combat related accident Oct. 13 while deployed to the Philippines in support of the Global War on Terrorism.

Spc. Scott Mullen, 22, a psychological operations specialist, assigned to the 5th Battalion, 4th Psychological Operations Group, U. S. Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command, died from head injuries sustained from a fall.

The accident is under investigation.

Mullen, a native of Tucson, Ariz., was at a local shopping mall near Manila, Philippines, when he fell from an escalator. He was immediately rushed to Makati Medical Center, Manila, Philippines, where he received emergency medical treatment.

Mullen entered the Army October 2003 and graduated basic combat training at Fort Knox, Ky. After completing advanced individual training at Fort Bragg, N.C., as a psychological operations specialist, Mullen then graduated from Airborne School at Fort Benning, Ga., during the spring of 2004.

His first and only duty assignment was 5th Battalion, 4th POG beginning in November 2004. In September 2005, Mullen deployed to Southeast Asia in support of Operation Enduring Freedom - Philippines.

He was advanced to the rank of specialist while serving in the Philippines.

His military awards include the Army Service Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service and Expeditionary Medals, and the Parachutist Badge.

Mullen is survived by his mother and father, Wanda and Harold, of Bayfield, Colo.; and his brother, Carl, of Fort Sill, Okla.
