Physical shape
I was just wondering what type of physical shape I should be in when I arrive at basic.
I am already in good shape but I have talked to people that have gone and have been told that you could always be in better shape for basic training. Currently I can do 80 push ups a lot of sit ups a comfortable mile in about 7 minutes and a fast mile in about 5 minutes 50 seconds I also work out everyday after school ( I am a junior in H.S.) |

Re: Physical shape
I dont know anything about Army Basic Training but you sound like you're in better overall shape than I was when I went into USMC Boot Camp a couple decades ago.
As a general rule, I believe it holds true that if you can work your body weight (pull ups, push ups, sit ups, bar dips ect) and have good cardio endurance you'll do fine where ever you go. Flexibility is often overlooked and it does help reduce injury. -Mac |

Re: Physical shape
You sound really good to me. If your BF is < 25% you're good to go. I have every confidence in your Drill SGT to work the rest off you.

Re: Physical shape
You dont want your body fat percentage too low. That's not a good thing. Basic Training is pretty endurance oriented and your body fat is a primary long term energy source. Iirc the "proper" bracket is between %12 and %16.
But, you'd know if you were over to any noticable degree. Folks would tell ya. Just dont push yourself too hard between now and then to reduce body fat if you dont have an excess already. Also dont push yourself too hard in training between now and then, just for General Practice. Basic would be plenty hard going in healthy but with shin splints, stress fractrues or skanked tendons and such, it might be a breaker. -Mac |

Re: Physical shape
Coming from BCT, not ITB, i can say this. You should be fine. As for what Ftr_FMF_DOC said, ignore him. If you perform well, you will get noticed. If you're an Sh**bag, they'll notice. You're DS' will know who you are. It isn't a bad thing to be a good Soldier in Basic. It's a bad thing when you act better than everyone else. Remember, the easiest way to make it through is to work together.
Good luck |
