Drill SGT School
Well, the Army Reserve must be real hard up because they let me re-enlist for 6 years after having been out for nearly 8 *and* 35 years old...
I'm heading to D/E 2nd/329th Training Battalion in a 3X slot i.e. Drill SGT. What can I expect when I attend school? Any advice for an old(er) guy who's been out since '97? I don't know if I'll be attending the Active Army school or the Reserve school but if I had to hazard a guess I'd say probably the Reserve version. Thanks!Droopy |

Re: Drill SGT School
The army was tring to get me to come back in to, as a Drill Sgt. They told me that "Former Marines are the Best Drill Sgts in the Army" If you find out anything let me know, i might still do it.

Re: Drill SGT School
Seems the unit I joined (I was wrong earlier, it's the 1st/329th) is presently deployed to Ft. Benning. I don't yet know what that means for me but I assume I'll be sent to Drill school fairly quickly. I did find a web page for Ft. Leonardwood's DS school that gave an overview of the course and it does indeed sound rough but not impossible. It has definately helped my motivation to get into better shape...! We'll see what happens, eh?!?

Re: Drill SGT School
Well in case you haven't left yet, (doubtful) there is no reserve drill sgt school. All Army schools with the exception of some MOS schools are Active. Airborne, Air Assault etc. The Drill Sgt school for the Reserves is an Active Drill Sgt School, the only difference is when you do your two weeks of annual training, you will be with a BCT Class normally in Phase Two! I hope this helps!!!!

Good luck at Fort Lost in The Woods opps I mean Fort Leonard Wood. It's a hole in the earth. Although they do have the worlds fourth largest Wal Mart right off post.

Re: Drill SGT School
Well to correct you on "there is no Reserve Drill Sgt School"............ There is, the school is in FT. Sill, Okla
The 95th Division (Institutional Training) is a Major Subordinate Command of the US Army Reserve Command with Headquarters in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma at the Harry L. Twaddle U.S. Armed Forces Reserve Center. The Division has over 3,500 soldiers assigned in Army Reserve centers located throughout the states of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Missouri and Iowa. The Division consists of an Infantry (BCT) Brigade, an Artillery (FAOSUT) Brigade, a Training Support Brigade, four Institutional (TASS) School Brigades, a Provisional Senior ROTC Brigade, a Drill Sergeant School, the Division Headquarters and Headquarters Company, and the 95th Division Band. In peacetime, the mission of the 95th Division (Institutional Training) is: Support of the Army's Training and Doctrine Command, TRADOC, by conducting Field Artillery Initial Entry Training and Basic Combat Initial Entry Training at the Army's Field Artillery Training Center, Fort Sill, Oklahoma. The Division's Institutional Training Brigades provide soldiers of the Army Reserve, National Guard and Active Army with Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) and Professional Development courses under the The Army School System (TASS) to prepare them for increasing levels of responsibility and readiness. In the event of mobilization, the Division will provide Drill Sergeants and TASS Instructors to backfill and augment TRADOC installations and the Army Medical Department (AMEDD) Center and School, as well as continue to provide instruction to members of the Reserve not affected by the mobilization. Thats my 2 cents worth......... |

Re: Drill SGT School
Have been around for a while. Thanks for the info. I'll be attending DSS Phase 1 at Ft. McCoy, Wisconsin, Phase II in Ft. Wayne, IN, and back to McCoy for Phase III. I leave for Phase I on July 7th. I'll let you all know how it turns out.

Re: Drill SGT School
As this is an old post " I just thought I would continue the thread with a bit more information for anyone who is going off to Drill Sergeant School in the near future"
There is also the 104th training Div out of the NorthWest that provides a DSS, the reserves is slowly changing over to a 2x2x2 (week phases) to meet TRADOC's requirements. As opposed to the 2 x 5 x 2 (2weeks/5monthdrills/2weeks) My suggestion before you go to Drill Sergeant school, is to learn your modules (they can be found on the Fort Jackson DSS website) as most students have problems with memorizing them. Also if you have been out for a while, double check the new PT standards as they have changed and many returning soldiers do not know the drills. Also, you may find allot of information within the "AKO" forums. |
