So I'm reporting to my first duty station...
I am currently home on leave, having graduated OSUT, Airborne (last friday). I'm busy working on getting my car title and insurance and all that other BS sorted out and I'm curious about a few things.
I'll be reporting to Ft. Bragg on the 25th, assigned to the 82nd Airborne (hooah!). Anyways, I'm wondering what I should report with. I'm not talking about paperwork or uniform, I know I need orders and the 201 file and all that. I mean what about my personal effects? Since I will be living there, I'm assuming that I can bring my stuff with me? I have 2 guitars (one acoustic, one electric) and amp, along with a turntable and some records to listen to. I also have an AK-47 and SKS. Something tells me it's not a good idea to stroll into the barracks with two un-checked weapons. I'm 19, this is the first time I've ever moved somewhere. When I report, is it alright/wise to have all my stuff with me? Is there storage for it while I'm being in-processed? Will I need to put it into commercial storage? Can I bring my weapons on base? What can I expect when I report to my unit? Any advice from someone who's 'been there done that' is appreciated, so I don't look like just another dumbass 11B private. |

A lot of it is going to depend on where you will be living. If it is in the barracks the guitars and amp will be ok as long as you dont disturb your room mates or take up too much room. Same thing with the turntable and etc. Personally I wouldnt take anything you couldnt store in a wardrobe or foot locker, theft can be a problem in the barracks. As for the weapons I would suggest you leave them home until you find out what the base regs are for personal weapons.

Just a small question what is a 19 year old doing with an AK-47 and an SKS ? Seems you had them prior to joining the military may I assume ? Base regs allow for personal weapons, is this like something new ? Doesn't the military have enough headaches without being concerned about personal weapons.
Congrats on the airborne school completion -SSGMIke.Ivy |

Re: So I'm reporting to my first duty station...
On my way to Ft. Bragg, I'll be stopping at my Grandma/Grandpa's in SC, I think I may leave most of my high-dollar items there, since it's only a few hours to drive back and pick them up when situated. I am assuming (but hoping not) that I'm probably gonna be stuck with 3 guys and a small wall-locker, since I'll be the "cherry." Is this a reasonable expectation?
As for the AK and SKS, I bought them when I turned 18, prior to enlisting. I enjoy firearms so I picked some up once I was of age. I'm hoping that I can bring the weapons with me, since it's something to do on the weekends. :/ |

Bring only what you have been issued until something permanent.
Expensive items might walk away. Check post regs regarding the firearms and be damned sure you comply. You may have to jump through a few hoops to keep them. Remember of age in Florida doesn't mean of age in North Carolina. |

Re: So I'm reporting to my first duty station...
pardon my New York ignorance here, but is not the AK-47 considered an assault weapon and banned ? To think a father would allow a son at 18 to purchase an assault weapon...not in my house that is for sure. But guess life is different out of New York. And deffinatley do not bring them to your duty station sure they will be confiscated from you.

AK are legal now, as long as they can't go full auto. It's from when the ban expired late last year.

Re: So I'm reporting to my first duty station...
The "AK-47" is not, and never was illegal. The 'assault' weapons ban was tremendously flawed, in that while it blocked out TRUE AK-47's, any other variation was allowed, as long as it was semi-automatic. What I own is actually a WASR-10, which is a romanian built version of the AK-47, and it fires semi-auto only. No disrespect here, but what's the difference between my dad letting me spend my money on legal firearms, and uncle sam giving me an M-16 or SAW? Ownership of firearms is a right, not a taboo...

Re: So I'm reporting to my first duty station...
You will spend as little as one week at Replacement andup to 2 weeks. After that you will be shipped to your permanent duty. While you are at Repo, you will only take with you Army Issue stuff and some civies. there is a parking lot there at Repo fr the Cherries. You can keep stuff in your car, however I would advise against it. Get a storage shed and store your personal stuff until you have been in your perm unit for about 30 days. After that you should be settled with al your inprocessing and what not. As far as weapon on Bragg. that is a huge NO-GO. You are not allowed to have personal weapons in the Barracks what so ever. However, ifyou get permission from the Provost Marshall and the Comapny CO and 1SG, I have seen it where they will llow you to keep 1 Weapon in the Compoany Arms Room. I would advise aginst that as well. Too many people going through the Arms room and people can touch or play around with your shit. Go to Bragg.Mil and you will be able to find ll the regs you want regarding the post. Word to the Wise, don't get caught with a rifle or gun of any kind in the barracks, they will fuck you something fierce.
