Determining the sound a bullet makes
Hey everyone,
I'm about to go into basic training and have this one tip that i heard from friends and from movies that I'm not quite sure are true. They all mention the diffrence between a "whizz" sound and a "wham" sound and being able to use thes noise to determine how close a bullet is flying by your head. In your opinion, what is the truth behind this? Thnks Ziegler |

Re: Determining the sound a bullet makes
The "whizz" is the round going by your head. The "wham" is it impacting something. And it's not a "wham", depends on what it impacts. Hummers sound like a person whipping pennies at you as hard as possible.

Re: Determining the sound a bullet makes
LOL now I have seen everything on this forum. A round that is coming at you has a very sharp "snapping" sound, to my ears anyway. That "whizzing" sound is you peeing your pants when you hear the "snapping" sound.

Why does he want to know the sound of a bullet if he is just going to basic training? Dude, you are not going to get shot in bootcamp. You will find out the noise when you are in Iraq.

You'll learn the sound of a round going over your head at basic when you go to the rifle range and have to pull targets in the butts. The sound of a round sailing over your head is a good sound, compared with the sound of a round hitting something near you or bouncing off the ground near your feet. |

Re: Determining the sound a bullet makes
When I was pulling the pits I don't remember hearing the rounds pass over my head and make a noise. I just remember hearing the sound of the round being fired and the sound of the impact.

All I got was the TWACK! FSSCCH...POCHH The Twack being the impact on the target the FSSCCH being the sound of the round piercing the air and the POCHH the sound of the shot. We shoot at 300 metres (1000 feet) and the fact the round is supersonic gives this sequence when you are standing on the receiving side of things. |
