Running Question

Wasn't sure which firum was the right one for this; is ok to run everyday or should you take some days off?
I run 2.5 miles daily, but I'm trying to increase that, I don't have any pain (except for normal soreness) this is combined with a strength workout Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Thanks for any help.

P.S. I searched runners world and couldn't find anything helpful.

Re: Running Question

Running is the best thing you can do. You can do Cardio work everyday, especially if you have no pain and have no trouble doing it, increase your length or speed if you want.

You can do cardio everyday, as for lifting weights you should only really do that every other day. You have to let your muscles rebuild themselves after lifting alot ya know?

So Cardio is "OK" for everyday, weight lifting, you seem to have it right with doing it 3 times a week, every other day.

(If you need a break from running for just 1 day or whatever, Sunday should be your "Break" day. You should just relax and do nothing on that day.)

Re: Running Question

at the distances you are running, going out every day shouldnt cause a lot of problems. If you get up around five miles a day or longer, I would recommend varying the routine. Running is the hardest thing you can do to your legs and feet. You can get just as good a cardio work out by riding a bike with a lot less impact stress to your legs. If you have a reasonably good racing style bike, perhaps you can do that twice a week, say tues and thurs. Swimming is also a good alternative to running every day if you have access to a pool

Yeah, Swimming is great for your health. I'd do it but there isn't a pool near me

Re: Running Question

Here's something I found, directly answering your question:

Is it unhealthy to run every day?

  • Basically it's not unhealthy to run every day as long as you're in shape and have adjusted your body to the daily stress.
  • Start out on soft surfaces for 4 months, increasing your mileage not more than 10% per week. This will help you to avoid shin splints and other injuries. Also be sure to stretch every day. Shin splints and stress fractures account for 70% of injuries in boot camp (though half of that is probably guys trying to get out of training)
  • Once you've been running every day switch off between soft surfaces and concrete since you'll be running on concrete in boot camp.
  • Take it easy at first, stretch always, and quit smoking.
