Military and Alcohol
I'm thinking about joining either the army infantry or the airforce security forces...i was curious, will drinking alcohol have a negative impact on my conditioning? I know i'll need to run long distances in the military...will alcohol take my energy? I'm 5'6, 146 pounds.

Re: Military and Alcohol
I know for British troops there is an official strict policy of zero tolerance on alcohol which I believe is the same for the US military. What happens informally is another matter...

Re: Military and Alcohol
I know my son told me that while they were deployed that they could only have 4 beers a week. Don't want them getting drunk and then the possibilty come up that they might have to fight. Sure makes sense to me.

Re: Military and Alcohol
If you are in Iraq, no alcohol. Having a beer (drink) or two here and there will not harm you. Some schools ban alcohol while you are a student.

Re: Military and Alcohol
i was in europe recently with my dad, traveling space-a (he's retired army), and we stopped at RAF Mildenhall. some bases put signs outside their main gate saying it's been so many days since their last DUI, just happened to be one the day before when we first saw the sign. thought it was somewhat funny, sarcastically saying "oh yeah, that's something to be proud of."

Re: Military and Alcohol
There is a General Order in place in the Iraqi-Kuwaiti theater of operations that forbids U.S. military personnel from consuming alcohol. There were a series of court-martials back in the spring for some folks caught drinking in Kuwait.

Re: Military and Alcohol
Probably something to do with habits and generalised drinking culture.
I remember having US personnel stare at us when we took them to the local for a beer in camo and with our rifles stacked in the corner. They told us that the policy for your forces was very strict and no way could you come from the field directly to a bar. That's probably the strange aspect of the citizen army we are, something in line with the British Territorial Army of WW2 memory. An Italian also told me once he had an american Master Sergeant come to the italian base now and then to swig a beer in Somalia. US policy being total ban on alcohol in operative areas he was suffering withdrawal symptoms. Cheers, Slainte |

Re: Military and Alcohol
Vulture you are right. Its part of General order #1. In Quatar you get up to 3 drinks a night. They have ration cards. Right before I left a troop from Hawaii was brought up on charges of being intoxicated. What did he consume ....... cough syrup. Troops have resulted to doing this and the military will nail you. As far as the DUI signs, yeah I thinks it a joke as well. But damn near every AF base them. Not to say that the AF is the only one, its designed to be a deterrant. Pope went as far as to seperate their board. Pope has AMC ans ACC personnel. When you come throughthe gate it has XX days since the last ACC DUI and XX days since the last AMC DUI. The 82nd ABD will give soldiers a day off if they go 82 days without a soldier getting killed on or of |
