The friendly fatherly instructors at PI are most helpful in overcoming this "issue".

Grunts in a combat zone tend to pay a lot of attention to what they are told and to what is going on around them. That and luck, is how you get to be an Old Grunt typing on the net.

The worst place I ever was was Army Northern Warfare school in Alaska.

This is Small boat and Mountain climbing, a lot of "free climbing".

As the only Marine in the class, I got the honor of going first. : )

I hate heights. : (

The good thing about it was that many of Army people I trained with were worth meeting.

Re: most dangerous branch and career in the military?

My thinking is this guy wants to join the military, but wants to make sure he doesn't get hurt and/or killed. That's pretty much why you get to go through training. BTW, amyone in any career field can find themselves in danger. I was a computer programmer in 1965 when I got volunteered to go to Nam via the Phillipines and flew some strange missions in helicopters.

Worth a solid chuckle from this civvy.

Reminds me of a stupid comment I put in a letter to my son in about Week two at PI. I said something like "Don't pull any pranks on the DIs." The young lad was prone to being "cute" and relying on his charm to keep him out of trouble.

The lad wrote back something like "No S^&*, you don't mess with the DIs. Don't worry about THAT!"

Daughter Sarah tells me the three most impressive people she met in her life were here three DIs. That job sounds so tough I wonder they can find anyone to do it.

As to "danger" (Sir "Danger" Krahn), I reread over the weekend "Band of Brothers". Not many in the 101st seemed to have made every op and survived. They seemed to be used like Marines - make an assault, have heavy casualties, and then get some time in the rear*. As I understand it, those line Infantry companies just stayed on line the whole time. This is an superbly written book, IMHO, one of the best, though I give "With the Old Breed" top honors personally. HBO did a good job with it also.

One may be excused for thinking Sherman had the right point of view on it all.

"I will make Georgia howl."

*I know campaigns like Guadalcanal and Okinawa lasted months.
