Phone time?
How much contact time will I have with my family back home during Marine recruit training? (Phone calling time). Also would I be able to call home to my girlfriend instead of my parents every once and a while to let her know I'm ok?
How much time will I have between the end of Recruit training and MOS school? and is that time negotiable? (do I have to go to MOS school immediately). Thanks |

Call your girl friend from time to time? It aint gonna happen dude. As for the time between boot and your MOS training, that depends on too many factors (such as what MOS actually is) to give you any idea. I wouldn't count on that being negotiable either, what do you think this is, the new softer army boot camp? -Top |

Re: Phone time?
No you can't make calls. At all. One of the happiest times in my life, I could say was getting those handwritten letters from my son. Darn..now I am crying.. LOL I cherish those letters.....
But you can't phone home, or e-mail ect. just call home if you can,,, -Pam |

Re: Phone time?
Oh I will definitely be writing home. Will I actually have any time to write a letter? It seems like it's a pretty crazy schedule!
So I'll still get paid for bootcamp right? Does anybody know how much I'll make over the 3 months? Or is that just another general question that depends on 100 different factors. |

Re: Phone time?
Top's right on it. The last hour (give or take, usually take) is Senior DI's time. That's your time to take care of the three s's, write home, read mail, and square away your stuff for the next day. I've heard of recruits nowadays getting more than that one call home when you first arrive, but I wouldn't count on it. The only exceptions I've heard of are in emergencies or if your Senior DI rewards the platoon with a short call for being the highest scoring platoon at the range, etc.. Best case scenario is two or three calls in boot camp. Count on one.
Yes, you get paid in boot camp. Let me rephrase that.. You accrue pay in boot camp. You'll receive chits (coupons) to buy the authorized basics, under supervision, at the recruit PX. That means toothpaste, shaving cream, stationary, etc. When you graduate you'll receive what you're owed, minus the money they took out for your uniform issue and taxes. At your MOS school you will receive regular pay per your rank and will be allowed to call home during your liberty hours. SOI lasts about 8 weeks unless you get stuck waiting for a class to start. In that case you may end up on mess duty or guard duty, etc, while waiting. It all depends. |

Re: Phone time?
When I went to bct in 89, I remember my SDSGT saying "anyone want to use the phone to call mommy?" and then smashed the public pay phone into the wall. I don't know if times have changed but I remember only once being allowed to use the phone and the whole time I was being insulted by a drill sergeant. too funny

Re: Phone time?
I read somewhere the benefit of being religious in BT is that after sunday service at your respective service, the clergy would let you use the phone. I might be wrong.
