I need someone who knows..
I am seeing someone who is 17 turning 18 soon (male). He's going to be a senior next year. He joined the delayed entry program for the marines which he can back out of at anytime. But my question is : If he backs out and stays for his senior year can he decide to enter again once he graduates? Please get backto me with the info, it would be appreciated. Thank you

Re: I need someone who knows..
Sadie,
As a member of the DEP program, he is committing to leave once he graduates from high school. Is he not going to go to the Marines (capital M) following graduation? If he does not graduate, he may not still qualify for enlistment. I don't understand why he would miss his senior year. Did he enlist into the Marine Reserves by chance? They have a split-option, which allows him to do boot camp the summer in between his junior and senior year. -peeps |

He was going to graduate early (as a sophomore) but his grades are slipping. I heard that if you change your mind while enlisted in the DEP you can back out though, is that true?

Re: I need someone who knows..
It is possible to back out, but before he does that, he should call his recruiter and tell him of the situation..... If he is still desiring to be a Marine, then the DEP contract can be renegotiated, to reflect his later graduation date and this is definately a more positive reflection on your boyfriend. His recruiter would rather do this than suffer a DEP loss for whatever reason.
As a last resort, he can back out of the DEP contract (but if he really wants to be a Marine, why would he, take option A!) He should expect a great deal of objection, but he can do it. -peeps |

I'm pretty sure that he's not elegible for enlistment (at least for active duty) until or unless he's graduated high school. I could be wrong tho.
Has he spoken to his recruiter about this? -Mac |

Re: I need someone who knows..
so....just so I understand, you (he) just called him up and said "I want out?" Your boyfriend (you) need to figure out what you want to do....if you really want to be a Marine, stick it out, renegotiate the DEP contract. The recruiter will take this alot better than the aforementioned "I want out" speech...but is seems its too late for that.
If you really don't want to be a Marine, you have to keep pushing to get out of the contract, I'm not sure what the specific protocol is, and don't expect a lot of help from your recruiter.....not that you can blame him/her. Be advised, you may have to 1. get your parents involved, not that I recommend it, you decided to enlist, this is your correction to make and 2. go above the recruiter to his chain of command to get the desired effect. Again, I think if in the long term you desire to become a Marine, then stick it out, renegotiate the DEP contract, go to Boot after you graduate and serve proudly. -peeps |

You mistake sophomore and junior? Ok, my radar is going off but I'll give you a chance to offer us some clarity and an honest no BS approach. There's no reason to make up false statements here, we aren't going to track you down and drag you to boot.
Give us facts and I'll be more than willing to answer your questions fully no BS attached. But don't spit down my back and call it rain... -JR |

hasbeen,
In the DEP you aren't commited to anything until you do the final swear in at MEPS and get on that bus to boot. -JR |
