ROTC question
I was gonna post this in the ROTC thread but i thought you guys could help me out here. I heard today that if you are in the guard and then go into ROTC you have the choice of not commisioning, but instead being promoted to E-6. has anyone heard anything about this? cuz i have always thought about doing ROTC but i don't want to be an officer (no offence).

Re: ROTC question
I've never heard of that... but it sounds dumb to tell you the truth. ROTC is in the business of making officers... not SSG's. It especially surprises me because the guard and reserve are somewhat hurting for officers at the moment. If this is a real program, I guess they are wanting to develope NCO's faster???

Re: ROTC question
Hell, I'd take being an officer over an e6 anyday. Especially if you've already served a deployment or two while being enlisted. Officers that think they know everything out of OCS or West Point or something like that, I have the 'respect the rank, not the person' theory over, but if you've served before as an officer, or if you've moved up from being enlisted, then I have a great deal of respect for you because you actually know your job and how to do it.
Like they say, you can't spell 'lost' without 'lt' (side story: my cherry LT was reading a map upside down and wondered why we got lost, we don't give him the map anymore to say the least) |

Re: ROTC question
When you are in ROTC and you drill with a Guard unit you get paid as an E-6. I think that this is what you heard. You cannot get called up at this time, if you are already commisioned in ROTC, because their contract suppercedes the Guard contract. I would post this in the ROTC forum though. They should be able to help you out a little better, as most of here haven't been in ROTC.

Re: ROTC question
If you flunk out of school, I believe they can enlist you as an NCO.

Re: ROTC question
Whoa there! ROTC to SSG? If he flunks out of ROTC, what makes him think they are qualified to be an NCO???????? From an Armor point of view, that makes one a Tank Commander, that has to train 3 crewmembers. The crew members, consisting of an E5 Gunner, PVT - SP4 Loader and Gunner would eat him for lunch.
I'll do some poking around, but if he gets more than SP4, I will surely disgusted! This is truly a laugher! |

Re: ROTC question
The Corps used to take their ROTC failures and force them to go through Boot Camp with a guarantee of E-3 once they completed training. Never heard of making E-6....

Re: ROTC question
In that Washington Guard, you enter the Similtaneous Memebership Program. You get paid as an E-6 and follow your platoon leader around and get to know the ropes at your drill. You go to school and do your ROTC stuff and when you graduate you get your shiny 'lil bar. If you flunk out you get posted back to your old rank/paygrade. You'll also, more than likely, transfer units becuase "...you won't be able to look at your comrades in the eye." Or says my recruiter.

Re: ROTC question
If that's accurarte, I believe it is extremely poisonious. There are enough bad NCO's already without making any college grad one. Being an NCO is not about being a book smart fellow. As for the Navy, if you fail out you come in as an e-3 or below. I know someone (read: actually served with) who left the academy and came in the Navy as an E-3. As well she should. You can't just pluck an NCO, they need to be groomed.
