Need advice on 15 Month Enlistment Option
Currently, I'm a reservist - a 92A, Automated Logistical Specialist attached to a BIDs unit.
I chose to be a reservist to finish college and get a commission. I figured it would make me a better officer to know how it is at the bottom. Although, being in the reserves doesn't quite feel like I'm getting the actual experience. I'm not sure whether it's being in the reserves or my MOS. Moreover, I rushed to join the Army - I hadn't done as much research about enlistment options as I would have liked to which resulted in my current MOS - 92A (no offense to fellow 92As). So my question is, if I were to take the 15 month enlistment option, would I be able to: -Change my contract to have a slot at Airborne, Air Assault, and Ranger school? -Change my MOS? -The enlistment bonus I received, would I have to repay it? -I came into the Army as an E-1 last year. Now I'm an E-3 and have 5 months until I'm promotable to E-4 (I'm pretty confident I'll get it). Would it be better to go active when I get it or ASAP? I'd definitely like to switch my MOS. Although, I'd like to be able to take online courses throughout my time on active duty if it's possible. Perhaps an MOS that corresponds to my major - Psychology. Any suggestions? I was thinking Psyops, but I hear there's only 1 unit that is active. I know with this enlistment option, it's likely that I'll be spending most of it in Iraq or Afghanistan that I don't mind at all, more to the experience. I plan on making a career out of the military. Even though I'm only 19, I really can't imagine myself working somewhere else without structure - so from that, I'd like to get experience so I can be a squared away O-1 unlike some I know and heard of. Thanks in advance. |

I agree with rusty, it looks to me that it's for those just signing up. however, you can take online classes when you're on active duty 'cause lots of guys do that. I think you can change your MOS when you re-enlist though, but I could be wrong. you can use psychology just about anywhere though, can't hurt at least.

When you go to re-enlist you may want to choose Regular Army and in doing that change your MOS, as for getting Ranger, Airborne, or Air Assult, I don't know if that can happen. If you have some time before re-enlisting you must get permision from your unit commander to be released for either MOS switching or going Regular Army. I'd say talk to your squad leader or PLT Sgt. They will be able to answer a little better. I would also recommend you talking to the recruiter at your unit, he will be able to give you more details on the 15 month enlisment. -Brenda |

But if I were to switch - for example, from reserve to guard or active - would it not override my CO's orders since it's from a Brig. General? Calling my unit's recruiter right now actually heh. Thanks for the help everyone. Just called - It's not available to prior-service, although there is a 24 month option he says; which is still good to go for me. No your CO must release you from his command. The 24 month option wouldn't matter anyway, because you still have 7 years left.

Re: Need advice on 15 Month Enlistment Option
Usually when you want to go active they will release you and let you go active. I was kind of confused on your original post, were you looking at college online or changing your MOS online? College is very possible, the MOS is not. let us know what you were talking about and will do some research for you, I know that you may be able to take a phase for an MOS on line but you must physically go to school to get a new MOS.

Ah okay. But what do you mean it wouldn't matter? I'm not trying to shorten my enlistment time - just trying to get in on a bit of active duty.

Your enlistment wouldn't change then, the terms would just convert to reg. Army. Like I have 3 years left and 2 IRR. If I were to go reg. Army I would still have 3 and 2 left.

The current MOS I have is something I wouldn't want to do when I get commissioned. The main reason why I want to go active is to get experience. I don't think there would be much sense in me going active with my current MOS which is near the bottom of my "Would Enjoy to Branch In" list. I'm thinking Intel, Counter Intel, HUMINT, Psyops, and Civil Affairs. Although I haven't found many individuals that can give me first hand experience of what a typical day is like. To 333MP: So you're saying I wouldn't be able to go active for 2 years then spend 6 years in the reserves since I enlisted for 6 years in the reserves and 2 in the IRR? |
