509th?
Hey everyone. Used to post on these forums all the time but I have been at Sand Hill. Just graduated and we are in Airborne hold right now.
Anyhows, it turns out that most of us are going to Ft. Polk. None of us are sure to what unit but we think its the 509th. If my resources are correct the 509th is like a "training" unit or something. Anyhows, what I was wandering is will we ever get deployed? And if not, how to I get somewhere else where I will be? |

Just give it time. You'll get there eventually. It's better to get all the training and "seasoning" you can first tho.

Re: 509th?
You were told correctly.. The 1st Bn (Abn) of the 509th Infantry is an "opposing force" for readiness exercises at Ft. Polk. The chances of that unit deploying are slim to none. If deploying means that much to you, you can try your luck at requesting a change of orders to someone with a high op-tempo, such as the 82nd or one of the Ranger Bns.. The thing to remember is, you could just as easily be transferred to a unit that just returned from overseas, in which case you'll go into a garisson and training lifestyle anyway. In my opinion, your best bet is to take whatever orders you get and make the most of it. If you want to go downrange in a couple years, I'm sure that the opportunity will still be there. Only then you'll be more prepared.

Re: 509th?
Oh I can vouch for that. The 82nd is always doing something somewhere. Fine tune some of your basic skills before you want head out the door. Good to see some motivation.
The OPFOR at Polk is not a bad job. Very few get to do it so use it as a learning tool. |

Re: 509th?
Actually 4th BDE of the 10th MTN is not relocating. The 2nd ACR that is alredy there is going to become the 10th MTN 4TH BDE.
The 2 ACR/10th MTN and 509th are two seperate beasts. And if memory serves me correctly they are on seperate ends of the post. |

Re: 509th?
yep. I guess Im going to the 10th mountain. Thats what my orders say anyways. A lot of everyones elses though says something like "Replace Transient" or something like that.
Will we be able to jump at Ft. polk every month? I dont just want to jump five times and have that be the end of it. Thanks. |

Re: 509th?
There is room at Bragg starting next August. The are standing up a 4th BDE (82nd) here as well. Just think you will have completed jump school and will not be able to wear your maroon beret. However, a freakin leg canb get orders to Bragg and wear it. So much for prestige.
