Does the Army still wear white uniforms? What are/were they for?

I read Colin Powell's book, and he was wearing a set as he was Christening(sp) some boat or something. Oh well thks anyway.

I am pretty sure it is a variant of the many dress uniforms...ie. mess whites, mess dress.

Dress Uniforms
Chapter 18
Army White Uniform—Male
18–1. Authorization for wear
The Army white uniform is authorized for wear by all male personnel as an optional dress uniform. Personnel normally
wear this uniform from April to October, except in clothing zones I and II, where they may wear it year-round (see
CTA 50–900). (For Army white uniform, officer, see fig 18–1; for service cap, white, general and field grade officers,
see fig 18–2; for service cap, white, company grade officers, see fig 18–3; for service cap, white, warrant officers, see
fig 18–4; for Army white uniform, enlisted, see fig 18–5; and for service cap, white, enlisted, see fig 18–6.)

BTW, there is also a female white uniform.

EDIT: I would also like to add that they are very expensive, and generally you will only see folks VERY high up the chain wear them. And as an aside, did you know there is also a friggin' CAPE authorized for wear with these dress uniforms....a friggin' CAPE man! It's good to be a lowly enlisted grunt, methinks...

Yeah, seen OLD pics with whites & cape...thought that was some ancient shit... I'm in agreement... it pays to be a lower rankin grunt

Man, I hate wearing class A's...can't imagine shelling out the dough for a friggin' cape! Though my old lady loves it when it's time to 'don the duds' and do the dining out thing. At least you can get drunk at those things...

No shit, class a's are expensive enough... A bunch of us had to buy new sets after we got back b/c our issue shit didnt fit anymore in the shoulders, baks, and legs after almost a year in the mountains...

I can't imagine buying something like that especially knowing I'd never wear it... Hell I live in BDU's...

I must admit, seeing a soldier decked out, does look nice. Not something for everyday, but it's nice to sit back and show off a little every now and then. Besides it gets the ladies!!!

Yes, unfortunately they do seem to prefer that dress up-shiny badges business more than a set of BDUs...

I must say I am truly looking forward to NOT shining my boots everyday...which will make it THAT MUCH harder for me to enjoy getting into the 'pickle suit'!
