Humpin in the Boonies
Hello, all,
I'm going on FTX in a couple of weeks, and was wondering what to volunteer to carry (i.e. SAW, spare barrel, radio, etc.) and what to avoid. Any tips, ideas, wisecracks? -Pfc. Black |

Re: Humpin in the Boonies
Hey,
It all kinda depends on who's in charge and how wonderful of a cadet you really are. As an MSI, you'll probably sit there a lot. Personally, I enjoyed being on the MG team. We don't have SAWs in our squad due to lack of equipment... we're lucky with m16's and blanks. Radio isn't bad since you won't be stuck on security. What makes and breaks a STX is not what you volunteer to carry, but what personal stuff you bring with you for pogie bait (candy, chew, etc). E.S. |

Re: Humpin in the Boonies
Whelp, If my ability to carry a lot on my back earns me the radio, okay. My phoenetic (sp) alphabet is pretty rusty, so I dunno how bad that'll be. Yeah, I know to bring all the other crap (personal gear) so I should be alright.
BTW, my BN commander wants to meet me (it's a positive meeting). Any suggestions on talking to the man? -PFC. Black |

Re: Humpin in the Boonies
First, I'm sure you (as 100% of the cadets do) are just carrying a nerf ruck, so a bunch of weight doesn't matter. If you can say C33 or C31 you're fine for your radio stuff. You're meeting must be with the BC not the C/BC? For the C/BC, just be down to earth and really honest. Be relaxed. Remember, IV's are just MSI's with 3 years of experience. For the real BC (cadre), make sure you look sharp and watch your sirs/mams. Again, be honest, and ask good questions that will help the BC give insight into what you are learning and how the program is affecting you. Just post after this if you have any other questions.

Re: Humpin in the Boonies
Oh, he is the real-deal BC. That's why I am so worked up. To be honest, the MS 3's that I have dealt with are real chickpeas. They managed to forget me on a road march. That's a long story.

Re: Humpin in the Boonies
Sucks for you man. I'd just take it easy and follow along. I know here we don't expect much of MSI's other than to follow orders and pay attention to what is going on...
Just don't talk about your drunken episodes to the BC... or how bad your classes are going, etc... Hopefully your III's pull it together within the next 2 months or they're SOL... E.S. |

Re: Humpin in the Boonies
Amen to that-
Oh, one other unorthadox question. I have a cadet instructor (she is a cadet major) who is prior service as a D.I. However, she is a great leader, and has taught me how important profane language is. She has made a lot of noise about her birthday being during FTX, and it struck me. To gift or not to gift? I was thinking of just getting a spare canteen and putting in a brew or two... Not that i would. Is it a good Idea to do that, as long as it is under the bn table? -Pfc. Black |

Re: Humpin in the Boonies
BAD IDEA. Very bad idea. That is one of those things cadre can't let you get away with if they find out. Yes, going out and drinking and getting in trouble for it is one thing. Having alcohol during a field exercize, especially if you're firing blanks (24 hr prohibition before firing ANY rounds, Army regs) can get you in deep shit. Yeah I know you're not drinking it... but it would be more acceptable to do something like hand her a cold one at a party the next weekend or during the week sometime. Not that I am encouraging underage drinking... or drinking with IV's who are supposed to be distancing themselves from the rest of the cadets... but just save it for later. Maybe a candle in an MRE pound cake would be a better gift out in the field....

Yeah, I thought so. It was more of a joke, but I was never good at telling those. I'm going to bed.
