S.F. Mulls Pulling JROTC Program From High Schools

(AP) SAN FRANCISCO The San Francisco Board of Education is considering expelling the Junior ROTC program from the city's high schools because of the Pentagon's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy on gays.

A resolution introduced Tuesday would end the city's relationship with JROTC by the 2007-2008 academic year. It argues that the military's ban on openly gay soldiers violates the district's equal rights policy for gays.

"If the military said, 'You can't be openly Jewish or you can't be openly Catholic,' I don't think we would have stood for it," said Mark Sanchez, the measure's author and the board's only gay member.

Some 1,625 students participate in Junior ROTC at seven San Francisco public high schools.

Under the proposal, which calls the military policy on gays a "state-sanctioned act of homophobia," a school board committee would develop a program with similar physical fitness aims, but without military ties.

Lt. Cmdr. Joe Carpenter, a Pentagon spokesman, said he didn't know of any school district that has barred JROTC from its campuses.

The resolution will come up for a final vote next month.

The San Francisco Board of Education is flat out ridiculous. JROTC in many ways is related to the military; but the JROTC does allow gay individuals in the program the program itself doesn't discriminate against gays.

In my old NJROTC unit we had several gays in the program two of them I happen to be very good friends with.

What about the students who aren't gay what will happen to them because someone got a wild hair up their butt? Why would you take a program that helps civilize civilization?

wow. banning JROTC because of Pentagon policy. what left-wing soccer mom came up with this one?

maybe someone should inform him that sexual preference and religious preference are two completely different things. So these people want to crack down on a bunch of high school kids when all they do is march around and do color gaurd? They are really putting a knife in the heart of the Pentagon policy with that one. They are really standing up against the "military." JROTC. Wow. If i were one of those JROTC kids i'd be pissed.

wow this is really getting out of control with them eliminating these programs i understand the eliminateion of JROTC satalite schools because being a stallite school is illegal (against regulations) but over a policy that the organization itself has no control of is ridiculous and also not to really get too in depth but sexuality really is not a choice for many people who are homosexual or bisexual. end of that discuession.

Another thing that is irritating is when schools threaten to eliminate JROTC if the budget fails so that those cadets parents will vote yes when in actuallity if they have a contract with the Navy , Marines..etc. then for the mostpart they have to give 1 years prior notice before eliminating it .
