new position
I finally got my position for this year!! I got my first choice(I slipped the colonel 500 monopoly) and I'm the flight commander(c/capt position) for one of our second year flights (flight=class period)! I'm just a tad bit nervous now about what kind of job I'm gonna do and I'm getting mixed signals from the kids about whether they're happy I'm their flight commander or not. Any advice?

the best advice I can give is that you dont lead from the rear....always set the example, they will get the idea

Re: new position
Have confidence in yourself. Like USMCRET siad, lead by example, excel outside of ROTC (sports or academics) show them that you deserve their respect and that you are a hard worker.
Also Congrats. I did 4 years in AFJROTC myself. -Rich |

Re: new position
Great Job Lupin! I'm currently the Deputy Group Commander and a flight commander for my unit. Umm... just re-emphasizing what the others said earlier.. You always want them to feel like they can come to you with any problems, or your Squadron Commander etc.. and just have fun with them. Come up with ideas on things to do with your flight like AFJROTC Jeopardy or something. Good luck!!!

Re: new position
congrats. I feel your anxiety. When I went to Fork Union Military Academy in high school, a select few seniors would be chosen to be officers their last year. They might have been privates or NCOs their Junior year then suddenly, BAM! they're "O"s. It's tough to lead people who might have been your friends before you assumed the mantle of leader. Don't let your authority go to your head, you might be in command but you are no better than your subordinates. I saw this happen to many, if not most people thrust into leadership positions. Year after year, the coolest guys would come into their senior year and become the biggest pricks on the planet. The opposite also happened. A very small few would one year be just the geekiest, wimpy mother fuckers but would turn into great leaders.
If you have the time, pick up some good leadership books. My personal favorite (and required reading at West Point) is Once An Eagle by Anton Myrer. Good luck man. Run into any leadership challenges, give one of us old timers a hollar. |

Re: new position
Good words of advice, Covert.
Don't take this as sappy but, have you ever thought of being a ROTC Instructor, from what i've seen you are stern enough, and "oh so gentle" lol when need be.-Rich |

Re: new position
No Sailor I don't think I'd make a good ROTC instructor. While I understand that there are many squared away "O"s to be there, I also have seen too many wimps and whiners there and they wouldn't last very long under my tutaleage. I can hear some mommy now, "Why did you bitch slap my son again?"
