instructors
hey. I'm just wondering what everyone else's instructors are like. what rank are they and what are their personalities/teaching habits?
I've got a Lt. Col- he worked radar so he's basically the desk jockey officer. he's nice but all he does during his classes (Aerospace Science) is read off the power point slides. He gives us between 5-10 questions in a test and all he teaches us is the answers to those 5-10 questions. It takes about 5 mins and then he puts on Air Force News and goes into his office. Boring. Then I've got two chiefs, one of which is new this year. old chief(or chief, chief)- awesome. truly awesome. he was a drill sgt at lackland for a few years a while back and he was actually in combat a few times, so basically he's most people's hero. he finished off his career as command cheif of the unit that flies and crews Air Force One. He always applies all his lessons to real life so that makes them a lot more fun than col's and from being a TI, he takes drill very seriously, is awesome at teaching it, and has the COOLEST command voice. He's basically the stereotypical grumpy old, one-of-the-guys E-9s. new chief- I've only talked to him once and just met him on monday, so I don't know much about him or his teaching style. He's like, 70 something years old, though and way older than THE chief and col. He's basically the nice old guy from what I know so far. Reminds me of my grandpa. All I know about his career in the Air Force is that he ended as the command chief of the United States Air Force Academy. So, basically, we've got a boring col and an impressive spread of chiefs. |

Re: instructors
Old guy here, but mine were:
LtCol, He was a Navy RIO, then switched over to Air Force and was a Navigator. He has Jump wings and he was kinda strange. He was a decent teacher. I learned a lot of what not to do (as a leader) from him. But he did have some good points. My senior year he was replaced by a Major. The major was prior enlisted and was a Supply Officer when he retired. Awesome guy. I wish I had more time with him. SMSGT- The single best teacher of my whole High School career. He was a real Senior Noncom. TACP. Airborne (served in the 82nd, and 502nd[i believe]) Had a combat jump (can't remember where). He was everything, a teacher, a stern leader, even like a father and mother sometime. He honestly saved my life. by helping me with decisions while I was younger. I will forever be indebted to him. Named in Who's wWHo of Teachers. -Rich |

Re: instructors
I will specify now that this is our Senior ROTC cadre.
LTC Armor branch fresh out of Iraq last year LTC(R) Infantry branch who is our recruiter MAJ Infantry branch who has served many years with the 82nd MAJ Ordinance branch who has spent a lot of time in mechanic shops CPT Armor branch who spent 3 months in Afganistan being an advisor to the new militia forces 2LT Signal branch Gold Bar Recruiter SFC 11B who has served in multiple combat zones; his last unit was the 10th Mountain All of them are good guys. The LTC and the SFC are a little intimidating, but the others are some of the easiest people to talk to that I know. E.S. |

Your Chain reads like a Combat roster. A lot of experience. You are lucky for that.

Re: instructors
MCJROTC -
Maj. - He was in Arty for a while, and I believe intelligence. He is a very smart and cool guy. Good teacher. He is a little lax however. His counterpart balances him out very well. He is a very open person, not the scary "OOHRAH I AM GONNA KILL YOU" type Marine. SgtMaj. - Career in Arty and recruiting. The man is the best teacher I have ever had and he is strict. He is tough on the new cadets but you just have to get on his good side. |

Re: instructors
well my are middle aged but with plenty of experience
air force jrotc Lt Col: flew A10's and their variants from 1973 to 1999. He flew at vietnam near the end as a marine then crossed into the blue in 1980. He also was the squadron commander and was in desert storm. He is one of the best teachers and a very brillant man, he has more flight hours than the hours I have on earth. He just about taught every 3 and 4 year cadet how to fly and is very decorated but he doesn't care about that just about flying. He can be very strict and funny evn though his jokes are very boring but we laugh so we won't get in trouble lol. He can be down to earth and all the other instructers in the city of philadelphia respect him and are intimadeted by him. He will always consider himself a marine though, I wonder why? Tsgt: very down to earth has some combat experience but was put in support division.Excellent nco and can be very strict but I have always enjoyed their company. His record is expansive and i can't remember everthing he has done. He can make almost anyone laugh. He should be awarded his own military school because he is a excellent leader. These guys are true soldiers and are what most cadets aspire to be someday. |

Re: instructors
Well we have 3 instructors in our Battalion (listed in order from most awesome, to not so awesome)
MSgt. Streck. He is the most awesome Marine ever. Lets seeeeeee, he enlisted at 17 and got into amtracks, he did 3 tours in Vietnam, and finished up his 21 years as a DI. Then he got into the whole ROTC business. Been teaching at the same school, in the same room, in the same chair for 24 years. He taught me a lot; we always talked and were very close. He was like my dad (I was around him for like 5 hours a day). He is funny (at times), very strict (likes everything done by the book, Old Corps), can get pretty angry and gives god ass chewing. Other that that he is awesome. 1stSgt. Rodriguez. Not sure about his carrer, he teaches over at the other high school. He was a DI though. A good guy, has a mean temper and you can never tell when he is really pissed off or just joking (always assume pissed off, to be safe). Once he decides he likes you, he is very funny. A great Marine. Col. Sullivan. Not the best SMI I’ve ever seen. He took over for Col. Dietrich my sophomore year (Dietrich was the most awesome SMI ever). Sully is New Corps, and he DOES NOT mesh well with the MI’s. He likes things done HIS way. I don’t think he has made some good leadership calls. All the past officers he has “spot-promoted” because he though they had potential, dropped out with a loathing for the program, or performed a school crime which got them into serious trouble so we could leave them as officers. I would say his entire system of doing things is screwed up, and doesn’t work for ROTC. |

Re: instructors
Do the instructors get the message across? The intimidation thing goes with the aspect of teaching. Keeping you guys in they gray area is what it is all about. When you are around your friends you tend to be lax, and when you are around people you are intimidated by you tend to be more apt to watch out around you. If they are friendly and edgy you will pay attention more. The ones that are intimadating, has anybody come across them downtown? Try talking to them then, or once you are done. I bet they will lighten up.
As far as teaching/instructing, I do right now. I teach CPR and AED to individuals within my group and also instruct, grade and certify A-10 pilots on how to do CAS from the ground. You may think that an A-10 pilot would know, but there is a difference between flying the jet and showing them how to plan it out by working in a joint enviorment. I stick away from power point as much as possible. Power Point is good, but when the individual teaching reads word for word from the slide one of two things is happening. They either don't know/can't remember the material or they are using somebody elses material and have not prepared themselves. I taught a class on the differences between the AC-130H and the AC-130U modelsto get my basic instructors certificate. If you count the three slides with pictures and one with a cool ass video clip there were 14 total. Power Point should be used as a guide line. A statement, bullet or point should pop up and the instructor should expound on it. When I teach the CPR and AED, I read what I call pertinent information to the students that they may encounter on the test, but the video (which we are required to show) does not cover these items. I sat down with a pencil and paper and watched the video, developed a guideline to do a review after each section is complete and a how to to run the class. Take this into consideration when you are other the other end later on down the road. Do you want your students falling asleep, bored or not picking up any info? A student is only as good as the instuctor that teaches them. |

Re: instructors
Mine are pretty cool. My instructors consist of a commander and a Senior Chief. They get the message across that you need to get things done right and if you dont wear your uniform all day on uniform day they will let you know that you did something wrong.
