Man allegedly drives electric shopping cart through store





(Court TV) — Police in Devils Lake, N.D., arrested Clifford Mattson after he turned his local Leevers Supermarket into a speedway. His vehicle was one of the store's electric shopping carts.

Mattson, 27, was allegedly intoxicated when he entered the store with a skateboard on June 27 and repeatedly attempted to use a telephone, according to Devils Lake police detective Susan Schwab.

When a store employee tried to eject him from the store, Mattson grabbed a shopping cart and began driving through the aisles. He ran into a shopper — the woman was not injured — and chased other customers around the store.

"He took off after them, laughing and pointing," Schwab said.

An officer dispatched to the store arrived to find Mattson talking to the store's manager near the cash register. Detective Schwab said it was unclear how or why Mattson's joyride had ended. The officer arrested the man and charged him with disorderly conduct.

Mattson was held under a 24-hour detoxification order. He faces 30 days in jail and a $500 fine for the incident.
