Couple Reports Seeing White Deer

SIMS, N.C. -- A Sims couple has reported seeing a white deer.

Bonnie Stith said she and her husband saw an animal grazing in a pasture near their home about a week ago.

Over the years, Stith has seen plenty of deer near her rural Sims home. But the one she saw a week ago was unlike any she had encountered before.

"It was just stark white," Stith told NBC-17. "Like a snow flake. as white as any white could be."

Stith said it happened as she and her husband were driving through the area at dusk.

"We were just saying, 'Look at him.' It was something we had never seen before," Stith said.

The sighting -- rare but not unheard of -- has been the talk of the town, with many folks comparing their white deer to the one struck by a car and placed on display in Garner.

"I wish they all could have seen it, because I'll probably never see it again," Stith said.

This is hunting season, and that means many deer are on the move, at risk of being killed by motorists or shot. Stith said she is praying the white deer has a better fortune. But, in case it doesn't she said she has her memory.

"I have the picture in my mind and my husband has the picture in his mind," Stith said.

Unfortunately, the Stiths did not have a camera at the time of the sighting.
