Woman gives birth to giant baby

A woman has given birth to a "giant" baby weighing more than 16 lb.

The healthy boy, named Ademilton, was born at a hospital in Salvador, north-eastern Brazil. At 16lb 11oz he is more than twice the size of the average new-born baby.

Ademilton was born by Caesarean section, although according to some reports doctors had tried to persuade the mother, Francisca Ramos dos Santos, 38, to give birth naturally.

Luiz Sena Azul, a pediatrician at the Albert Sabin Maternity Hospital, said: "Ademilton can truly be considered a giant baby, for he was born weighing what a six-month-old baby normally weighs."

Hospital director Rita Leal said mother and baby were fine. She said: "She knew Ademilton would be a big baby, but not this big. She, her husband and the hospital staff were caught by surprise."

Santos has four other children, aged nine, 12, 14, and 15, who were born weighing between 7lb 11oz and 11lb.

Carmelina Fedele of Italy set the world record for the heaviest baby in 1955 when she gave birth to a 22lb 8oz boy.
