Pretty much its a non-profit organization. It is the official auxillary of the USAF. In such, you wear USAF uniforms but are not part of the Armed Forces. Its like JROTC/ROTC. The biggest diffference is that CAP has missions. And can actually get involved in the community and such. We learn a lot of things about everything. They have summer courses that range from engineering to flight academy. Air Education and Training Command to Pararescure Orientation Course. Sometimes (if your in a good wing and lucky) you can participate in Search and Rescue. I know lots of people who have had those oppertunities but I myself havent. The only "official" mission I have been on were two jacked up radio towers that looked like an ELT (Crashed Airplane)

But we learn a lot about military customes, traditions, ect. We have opperunties to "hang out" with all kinds of different military personal all the time. I think 80% of the people in CAP end up joining the military. You really just need to find the unit closest to you and go attend one of their weekly meetings. They will square you away........If your considering joining.

You need to keep in mind though that each squadron is different. In our wing our squadron the cadets are all leaning more towards military careers doing Infantry or something like that. (which is really weird by the way) Most squadrons the cadets want to enter the Airforce, more particularly, being a fighter pilot.

We have fun on FTX's, rolling around in the mud.....putting on face paint.....wearing tactical gear and pretending we are doing something importnant.....ect.

Well bay pretty much explained it, but if you have any specific questions let myself or bay know. Also how old are you? where do you live? what are your interests? ect.......... Cadets can get scholarships, attend summer activies, serve their communities and learn basic principals of flight. Check up on the other CAP post to learn more.

Califonia has one of the best cadet programs in the nation. Go to you local unit and try it out. Try locating you nearest you at the CAP NHQ @ www.cap.gov there should be a link for "find a unit near you". if you need anything else just ask!

When my Father was in the CAP during the early WWII years, they flew patrols, performed Aircraft Spotter Warning, went on field exercises with the NG, co-ordinated Civil Defense, etc. They were dedicated, motivated, and took their job seriously. They were the Home guard.

I would go ahead and join now, get some experience then in the summer go to a class a "encampment" I is kinda like a mini basic training, they have them in the winter too. There is no sense in waiting though, if it is what you want go for it!

I personally hate CAP....You need to show 0 leadership skills to be promoted...i had a 14 year old 1Lt. who thought he was tuffshit, I tried to correct him once because he kept calling commands on the wrong foot...Yea he blew up in my face... needless to say I havent been back since......I prefer JROTC. where you have to knwo your shit to proceed in rank....

i disagree!! SOME UNITS ARE THAT WAY. just like some AFJROTC units are that way. In my unit you have to be pretty damn squared away to be promoted. And yes i know what you mean about young officers who think they are tought shit, all cadet programs have that. And unless you can state to me everything that has to be done in order to get promoted in the CAP, STFU!
