Question about your units drill team
In yall other units, how do yall decide who becomes the commander of the drill team? And does your exhibition team keep the same routine each year, or do yall make a new one? Also, fell free to say anything that your team does differently.

Re: Question about your units drill team
All of our Commanders were selected for leadership and skill. We changed most drills but kept some. Our drill and Color guard commanders were part of the cadet staff, so there voice could be heard.

Re: Question about your units drill team
I was the commander of the drill team at Fork Union Military Academy in 1979. I was also the rifle soloist commander for 1978 and 1979.

Re: Question about your units drill team
Well when I was in it went by leadership. The most senior qualified person gets the job (usually an officer, or soon to be officer). We liked to change the routines up every year. It was the commander’s decision what the new routine would be. One thing I do have to say, I couldn’t STAND the MCJROTC units I would see that copied the Silent Drill Team’s routine. Even if they won, and it looked good, they still have not earned the right to perform that routine.

Re: Question about your units drill team
On my drill team, the team CO applies for the billet, and is selected by the battalion CO. As for the routines, yeah we make new ones each year. We compete in the nation drill meet down at Toulane University, and we win it, cause University of Illinois is the World's Greatest NROTC Unit, and our drill team is amazing.

Re: Question about your units drill team
Hold on.....so looking at the world's greatest military drill team and getting ideas from that routine is wrong? How can you have that logic? What do you think all of this exhibition drill was taken from? Somebody has to see something done before they themselves can do it. You might think that it's copying but it's not the same. To examine something that will inspire you is not anything that you should be ashamed of. Everyone has to be taught.

Re: Question about your units drill team
I feel that it is ok to take ideas from other teams but also you need to put your own stuff in. Let me give you an instant. The unarmed drill team and armed drill team had done a routine together and they used some of the same thing that we had seen at comp but then we used some of our own stuff

You can take a movment or an exchange, or get all “inspired” by a team, but not copy their routine. Don’t really know what they are teaching you at that high school . . . |

I said IDEAS NOT COPYING or as you said, "to get all 'inspired'" by the silent drill team so you can back the hell off and pull the stick out of your ass and read what I post before you post a response.

Re: Question about your units drill team
I’m done with this topic, but . . .
“Somebody has to see something done before they themselves can do it.” How can that be so? Are you suggesting that in order for something to do something, there must have been a previous action that the person can reference? Then where do ideas come from? Are you suggesting that they are simply copies of something someone has seen before? But then, where do new things come from? How can someone create something new if they must reference something already created? Just wondering . . . Oh, and if you think I’m being and ass you should reference my first post where I said “I would see that COPIED the Silent Drill Team’s routine” Therefore referring to persons who copied the drill team, not referenced them. See the definition of copy below for clarification. cop•y (k p ) n. pl. cop•ies 1. An imitation or reproduction of an original; a duplicate: a copy of a painting; made two copies of the letter. |

Re: Question about your units drill team
Our Drill team has two consistent members... me, and Brian Raeda. Even the elected commnader only shows up once in awhile. So, we suck. Raeda is really the commander now, but neither Raeda nor I are that good.

Re: Question about your units drill team
When I was in JROTC, our commander was selected by the instructors. Starting my junior year (3-year school) they actually began holding boards for cadet wing staff positions, including Drill Team CC. The decision was made based on leadership ability, competency for the position, ability to perform under pressure (based largely on performance during competitive inspections), etc.
As far as our routines went, we typically would figure out what we really liked from the previous year, and build on it. My senior year (I was CC ) our exhibition w/arms routine was completely silent, with several different ripples and a rippling exchange where I walked between the lines. When it worked it looked amazing. When it didn't...well, an M-1 will give you a headache. |
