Marine EOD adds high-tech tool to their arsenal

CAMP LEMONIER, Djibouti (Sept. 23, 2004) -- For the last month, Detachment 20, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 8 has been testing the capabilities of a versatile tool that has recently been added to their arsenal.
The Vanguard MK II, a mere two-foot tall remote operated robot, may not be the biggest weapon the EOD technicians have, but it’s a potential lifesaver, says Petty Officer 1st Class Taylor Hatcher, EOD technician, Detachment 20, EOD Mobile Unit 8.
“We’re able to send the robot down range instead of personnel,” said Hatcher, a Steamboat Springs, Co., native. “Before the robot we used the traditional method of sending a human body down range. The robot is totally designed to keep a human body alive.”
The small robot has two tracks, which enable it to turn 90 degrees without moving forward. It’s mobility and size enables it to traverse difficult terrain, which even includes stairs, Hatcher said. Its small size also enables it to get into some difficult and tight spaces.
Although its ability to eliminate potential explosive devices or ordnance is limited, the robot’s three cameras enable the operators to get a good view of a site beforehand.
“It’s not always going to be the right tool, but it’s good to give the initial go ahead,” Hatcher said. “It can provide initial reconnaissance of a suspicious package.”
Anything suspicious includes boxes, backpacks and even vehicles, Hatcher said. The robot can be used to let the technicians know what hazards they face before putting themselves at risk.
“We have already had to use it on a real call,” Hatcher said. “We also do regular training with it to test its capabilities and identify any weaknesses.”
Although Detachment 20, EOD Mobile Unit 8 is reaching the end of its deployment here in the Horn of Africa, the robot will not be going with them back to Sigonella, Sicily.
“The robot says here,” Hatcher said. “The detachment after us will have it.”
