Becoming an Air Force pilot

Hello. I am currently a junior in college studying mathematics and mechanical engineering. I used to be obsessed with flying and becoming a fighter pilot for the air force. As I got into college, I decided to drop the air force thing and concentrate on engineering. Now, after long discussion and endless ours of pondering, I've decided that being a pilot in the air force is the thing for me.

I understand that it's too late for ROTC and the Academy, however, I've heard that MOST of the air forces fighter pilots come out of the Academy, and pretty much the rest come from ROTC. Only a select few "walk ons" get the priviledge of becoming a fighter pilot.

I gues my question for me would be, what do I do??? Is there any chance at all for me to become a fighter pilot after I graduate college? If so, what steps should I take to get there?

I've also heard that it's easier to become a fighter pilot for the Marines. Would that be a better choice for me? What steps should I take if I decide to go in that direction?

Best thing I can think of to do is go to the ROTC unit on the Campus where you go to school and talk to them. If they dont have the answers they should be able to direct you to someone who has them.

Re: Becoming an Air Force pilot

Okay, here's the deal. Go to an Air Force recruiter and tell him you want to be a pilot after you graduate from college with your engineering degree. When he stops drooling (it'll be over the degree, not the fact that you want to be a pilot, every third guy he sees wants to be a pilot), tell him you don't want to enlist first (he'll try that) and that you want to go to OTS and then to UPT. Make him do his job. If he seems reluctant in anyway, remind him that the Navy and the Marines are in the same building (they always are). He should set you up to take the Air Force Officer's Qualification Test (AFOQT) and a UPT qualification test (I don't remember the name of that one). If he tries to talk you into just going to OTS and then appying to UPT later, remind him the Navy and Marines want engineers too, and also have fighters. You are in a very unique position of having something that most recruiters want (or will have soon), and that's a degree in engineering, that almost puts you in the driver's seat.

OTS is still an option. Its tough to get in because the AF is overstaffed (well, that's the story, anyway). OCS Foundation Portal can be your friend on this one. Lots of good info over there.
