Army/ Air Force Burnout Prevention Programs



  1. STOP DENYING.
    USAF: Listen to the wisdom of your body. Begin to freely admit the stresses and pressures that you have manifested physically, mentally, or emotionally. Meditate even more frequently.
    Army: Work until the physical pain forces you into unconsciousness, then you can't hear your body.
  2. AVOID ISOLATION.
    USAF: Don't do everything alone! Develop or renew intimacies with friends and loved ones. Closeness not only brings new insights, but also is anathema to agitation and depression.
    Army: Shut your office door and lock it from the inside. Stay away from other people, they will only try to distract you and prevent you from accomplishing your mission.
  3. CHANGE YOUR CIRCUMSTANCES.
    USAF: If your job, relationship, situation, or another person is dragging you under, try to alter your circumstances. If necessary move.
    Army: If you think something is dragging you under, suppress this thought. This type of thinking is a sign of weakness. Go get a cup of coffee!
  4. DIMINISH INTENSITY IN YOUR LIFE.
    USAF: Pinpoint the areas or aspects of your life that summon up the most concentrated intensity then work towards alleviating that pressure.
    Army: Increase the intensity! Maximum intensity = Maximum productivity. If you find yourself relaxed and your mind wondering, you are not doing your job. Get with the program.
  5. STOP OVERNURTURING.
    USAF: If you routinely take on other people's problems and responsibilities, learn to gracefully disengage yourself. Try to get some nurturing for yourself.
    Army: You ARE responsible for everything. If others are not getting the job done, step in and get it done yourself, at least until you can get the slackers transferred to another service.
  6. LEARN TO SAY "NO".
    USAF: Speak up for yourself. By saying "NO", you will diminish the stresses in your life.
    Army: Never say no to anything. Saying "NO" is a sign of weakness. You are on duty 24 hours a day, there is time.
  7. BACK OFF AND DETACH.
    USAF: Delegate, not only at work, but with family and friends as well.
    ARMY: Too much delegation is a sign of weakness. The true leader is the involved leader. If you are not involved in the mission, you are not needed.
  8. REASSESS YOUR VALUES.
    USAF: Sort out the meaningful values from the fleeting ones. Sort out the essential from the nonessential. You'll conserve time and energy and begin to feel more centered.
    ARMY: Stop thinking about yourself. If your values change, we will make an announcement to inform you.
  9. LEARN TO PACE YOURSELF.
    USAF: Take life in moderation. You only have so much energy to expend. Ascertain what is valuable in your life, then balance work with love, pleasure, and relaxation.
    ARMY: A balanced life is a myth perpetuated by liberal arts teachers. Don't be a fool. The only thing that really matters in life is accomplishing the mission. Remember your priorities: Mission, Men, then Me.
  10. TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY.
    USAF: Don't skip meals, abuse yourself with rigid diets, or disregard your need for sleep. Most importantly NEVER exercise to the point where you really feel it, this could lead to unwanted pain.
    ARMY: Your body serves your mind
