Re: Ft. Meade
Field,
I just spent the last two weeks at the Agency. I've never had the "pleasure" to be stationed at Meade, but have visited and trained there. The area is ok, kind of expensive. If you like sports, you are in heaven. Great food too. As for the areas, I have not spent enough time to figure out what is best to live and what should be avoided. Good luck on the assignment and good hunting. |

Re: Ft. Meade
Annapolis is nice as well. By some stock in asprin and get a satellite radio for those beautiful days that you are stuck in traffic.
I grew up in MD. What exactly are you looking for in your travels? |

Re: Ft. Meade
Don't know really. I think I will be living in either Laurel or Glen Burnie. I know there are A LOT of clubs in B-more. I was just curious how big the base (in general) is. The area, is it a big military area? things of that nature.

Re: Ft. Meade
I am not positive buy there may be a metro rail that runs near there. This could be an option where you could live a little farther away.
I would take Glen Burnie over Laurel in a heart beat. |

Re: Ft. Meade
Really? Why? How far is it from the Fort? What do you think of the military in the area? I hear Service components of the Agency (at least the Navy) make a lot of the Military guys go down to DC, to participate in stuff. I think it's kind of cool. I had been looking forward to seeing Bush Innagurated anyway. (If I'm not deployed already).

Re: Ft. Meade
I do not know to much what the Navy guys do, however I lived in the following areas:
Annapolis, Greenbelt, Riverdale, Golden Beach, and Clinton. My wifes parents live near Fredrick and dad (ex-Navy) works a Ft. Detrick/Ft. Ritchie. My dad lives in the Baltimore area. I know you don't want to live in Fairfax, VA. E-X-P-E-N-S-I-V-E! If you locate near one of the main highways you can be pretty much anywhere (east of the Chesapeake) in less than two hours. I would say go south towards Bowie. If you go North that will put you in Baltimore and Annapolis and to the west is DC (if memory serves me correctly). |

Well I won't be at a Navy Command. My SEA (Senior Enlisted Advisor) is a MGySgt (Master Gunnery Sergeant) and my NCOIC, is a Army guy, (just got back from a year in Iraq, with the 10th Mountain).

Re: Ft. Meade
he's right on the decision to live in Glen burnie as opposed to Laurel...Glen burnie, is the nicer of the two......Also, fairfax county is way way way expensive. the median income there is around 90k & the prices of the houses and apartments reflect that big time.... example: in pentagon row (a new development near the pentagon city mall, across from the pentagon) a friend of mine had a studio apartment that cost her 1100/month....BE prepared for traffic, the DC-Metro area is one big traffic clusterfuck...from 1530 - 1830 traffic is usually bumper to bumper or slightly better than that....Make life easy & live where the commute is shorter. Rusty, how long has it been since you've been back to that area? I moved to richmond last august & everytime i go back it seems to get worse.....
http://www.wmata.com/metrorail/systemmap.cfm heres a map of the va-md-dc metro rail, if Ft. Meade is near a metro stop & you live near a metro station it will definately help you......The govt will give you Metro checks that will basically pay for the commute........Also MEtro has implemented smart cards which are basically a 1 stop shop card for traveling on metro buses & rail.......You can load up cash, metro checks or link it to a credit card & use it to pay for parking at metro stations (if you ahve to drive to 1), then pay for your rail fare, and should be able to use it on all metro buses by now. hope this helps |

Re: Ft. Meade
Sounds good. And yes i'll be at the NSA Compund. I'm sure there is a metro but I don't know if they go by the NSA Building. I kind of doubt it, lol. I will probably look into car pooling if that will help at all. I have a really good friend that lives in Pasadena. Also, my sponsor lives in Glen Burnie. From what I heard, I'm about midway between B-more and DC. About 45 minutes either way. Hell I shouldn't worry about it that much, rumor has it that we are on a 90/90 rotation, lol. SO once I get settled in I'll be gone. Oh well.
