requirement question
I'm not sure how accurate aboutmilitary.com is, however i was reading about the requirements for Cryptological Linguist, which is the MOS i really want.
Heres the article: *no linking to other forums -RR In the article it states the following: (13) No record of conviction by civil court for any offense other than minor traffic violations. Currently I am going in on a waiver because when I was 19, I'll be 23 in october, I got a DUI and a minor in possesion of alcohol. Both charges were exsponged, and didnt come back on initial background checks. Even though I will have the waiver, will I be ineligable for any MOS that has the above requirement????? I HOPE NOT! |

Re: requirement question
I am not familiar with Army proceedure. I was a Marine and even that was almost 20 years ago but I did have a Top Secret clearance with some drug usage and juvanile crime in my past..this is how it worked for me back then..maybe it's still true.
As long as I qualified for basic Secret, I had the opportunity to qualify for Top Secret as my job did require it. The hook was the lie detector test and interrogation. I was absolutely honest, warts and all and I was told after that that's why I got the clearance. The reasoning given was: 1. by being completely forthcomming I could not be blackmailed by past "skelletons in my closet" 2. by being completely forthcomming I proved my intention to be trustworthy. Maybe others have more relevant info for you but my advice is dont try to hide anything, it will come back to bite you hard if you do. -Mac |

Re: requirement question
You will not be disqaulified. It won't help, but there are people with worse records than that around. I know first hand. Just be totally honest. I just had a polygraph, it wasn't bad. You can do it, just disclose it all.

Re: requirement question
By the way, the reason I posted what I did was, because along the security lines the decision is made at the DOD level, not the Navy or Army level.

Re: requirement question
Okay, well on the paperwork it says that I've only done marijuana 3 times in high school and nothing else. If, on polygraph/interrogation, I am completely honest and tell them I've done marijana more times than that or tell them something that isnt on the paperwork, would that disqualify me?? More importantly, would that bring the hammer of 'false enlistement' on me??

Re: requirement question
First of all I would say DON'T LIE on your polygraph or to the interviewer for your clearance. I would say don't lie to your recruiter, but that's your choice. Hell, recruiters lie enough themselves.
Anyway, don't think interrogation. it's an interview. Here's what happened when I went through. In bootcamp I was called aside to get an initial interview, they asked the basic questions: ever been arrested, used drugs, etc... Then you submit paperwork (SF 153) the Dept goes through and talks to people you wrote down as references, then they talk to people that your references talked about. They put your package together and decide if you are TRUSTWORTHY (which is exactly what all clearances are based on: TRUST). If there were any problems they will call you back for a second interview. Once they are satisfied either way they make a decision and you find out. Polygraphs are not the standard, I know people who ahve been in 10 or 15 years without ever getting one. some people get them after a year or two. A lot of that depends on what kind of job you are doing. The thing to remember about Polygraphs is they are about counter-terrorism and counter-intelligence. They cannot ask you how many times you have had sex, or if you are gay. They cannot ask anything about your lifestyle. I had a second interview, because of some of my refernces didn't check all the way out. No biggie, i have had my clearance fro a while now. When I went for my second interview, he told me he wsan't there as a cop, he represented the gov't, and they wanted to know if they could trust me. he said tell the truth, because it will all stay with in DONCAF (dept of the Navy, Central Adjudification*sp* Facility) he doesn't report to anyone on what he talks to you about. -Rich |

Re: requirement question
I know this is a bit off topic but........When did they start giving lie detectors for a Secret or above clearance? I had a Secret clearance from the time I went in, held a crypto access for all of my 24 years and got a top secret clearance with access to go on MSG Duty....................not one lie detector test in all of my 24 years.

Re: requirement question
If you are ever assigned to an NSA billet, you have to take a Counter-espionage Scope Polygraph (CSP). Also to be at an NSA command you will have to have a TS clearance with access to Compartmented info. I know certain other jobs need polys also but I can't name them off the top of my head.

Re: requirement question
And once you do get it, try not screw up. It is way easier to keep it than to get it. But people loose them all the time, for stupid reasons (read: Adultery, bad checks etc...)

Re: requirement question
In dealing with clearances, they want you to be honest, so noone has the chance to blackmail you and do things you should not do, like try and make you steal stuff for them or they rat on you for lying. As for polygraphs, we started taking them because we also started sending our reports to the NSA and since we are dealing with them is why we started taking polygraphs.
