Re: Favorite Marine Hero

I tend to think of the nameless grunts who performed incredible acts of heroism never seen by any survivor.

Another guy I admire who didn't talk about his actions in heroic terms is E. B. Sledge who wrote "With the Old Breed", a spendidly written gritty recount of the 1st Mar Div in WW II from Peleliu through Okinawa. He would be the last person to put his name in with the others you mention above... That book in my humble opinion deserves mention along side of others like "All's Quiet on the Western Front" and "Das Boot", etc.

I purchased a copy of Col. Fox's book which he signed to my son. I enjoyed reading the book - he had a 43 year career in the USMC.

Re: Favorite Marine Hero

You don't have him up there, but my favorite is Carlos Hathcock, best Marine Sniper in the Corps history with 93 Confirmed kills in Vietnam. The book about him called "Marine Sniper: 93 Confirmed Kills" by Charles W. Henderson is a great book, I read it twice now and still want to read it again, it is simply amazing and so was he.
