Cpl Anthony Casamento
ANTHONY CASAMENTO
CORPORAL, USMC ![]() Corporal Anthony Casamento was born 16 November 1920 in Manhattan, New York, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Casamento. On 12 September 1980, President Jimmy Carter presented the Medal of Honor to Casamento in a ceremony in the White House Rose Garden, 38 years after Casamento's heroism on Guadalcanal in 1942. Corporal Casamento enlisted in the Marine Corps on 19 August 1940 in New York City. After completing recruit training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island, South Carolina, Casamento was assigned to the 5th Marines of the 1st Marine Division. Six months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the 5th Marines was on its way to the southwest Pacific to take part in the initial invasion of Japanese-held territory as part of the 1st Marine Division. The Marine landing on Guadalcanal began in August 1942 and Corporal Casamento made the assault with Company D, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines. On 1 November, 1942, while serving as a leader of a machine gun squad, Corporal Casamento's Marines came under heavy enemy fire near the Matanikau River. During the ensuing battle, all members of Casamento's unit were either killed or severely wounded. Despite his own multiple wounds, Corporal Casamento continued to provide supporting fire and heroically held the enemy at bay, thereby protecting the flanks of adjoining companies until he was physically unable to continue. Casamento was treated at a medical aid station, then shipped back to the United States and admitted to the naval hospital in Oakland, California. In 1964, it was learned that two eyewitnesses to Casamento's heroism were still alive. That set in motion a chain of events that would ultimately result in Casamento receiving the Medal of Honor in 1980. In addition to the Medal of Honor, Casamento's awards include the Purple Heart, the World War II Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with two bronze stars, the Presidential Unit Citation and the American Defense Service Medal. Casamento died 27 July 1987 in the VA hospital in Northport, New York, after a long illness. |

In a White House ceremony, former Cpl Anthony Casamento, a machine gun squad leader in the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, was decorated by President Jimmy Carter on August 22, 1980, 38 years after the battle for Guadalcanal. Looking on are Casamento's wife and daughters and Gen Robert H. Barrow, Marine Commandant.Quote:

Re: Cpl Anthony Casamento
It is very hard to understand why someone would write a comment regarding a family member which is not positive and uplifting when the person was a hero. I AM Anthony Casamento's daughter, Mary. My father was a hero on the battlefield, in life, and with his family. It is sad that my sister has so many of her own issues that she finds the need to slander his name by telling false stories. My father stood up for what he believe in. He never waivered in his commitment to his men and his convictions. He was a rock for his family. He never lied, never cheated, never did anything but stand up for ideals which were much bigger than himself. He never abandoned his children. He raised them on a disability pension and they were well provided for. He was someone that everyone should aspire to be like. He didn't try to take from people to make himself feel better. He was a giver to the day he passed. People could spend a life time and not accomplish the things he did. If he ever did something wrong, it was because he felt at the time he was doing the right thing, and he fought hard to try and not enable people to fail. That makes his someone special. I couldn't be any prouder of him. I loved my father then, and I love him now. He was what America stands for, and sometimes when you stand up for the right things, people who do the wrong things don't care for you. It take true bravery to be on the right side. He was something that rarely comes along. He was a small town man, uneducated, and he took on the Japanese, he took on the politicians, and he took on the establishment, and he did it solely for the memory of his men who died. That's someone who I hope I can someday live up to.

Re: Cpl Anthony Casamento
I just wanted to say that CPL Casamento is part of the reason I have so much respect for USMC. He truly embodied the fighting spirit of a warrior. To both of his family members here you both should be proud.

Re: Cpl Anthony Casamento
Thank you so much for your kind words. It's nice to know that people appreciate what my dad and all of our other soliders did to make our country safe, and to protect our ideals. Many men lost their lives, their limbs, their health, to keep our great country safe. I salute all our service men. They are all heroes in my eyes. God bless them.

Mary-
Thank you for posting on the board and letting us know more about your dad. Today's generation needs to see examples such as your dad, instead of highly paid, non reputable sports "Stars" as heroes. Thanks again-Bob |
