Emerson Edward Nutter was born 30 August 1884 in Nuttersville, WV, and died 02 September 1964 in Richwood, Nicholas Co., WV. He married Lettie Virginia Miller 30 June 1908 in Gatewood, Fayette Co., WV, daughter of Alfred Miller and Emma Kindley. Emerson moved to Gatewood to work in the coal mines. Lettie was going with a John Nutter at the time. John and she were walking one day when she spied Emerson. She liked Emerson better and they eventually married. This was told by their daughter Bessie Nutter O'Dell. My maternal grandmother was Bessie Nutter, Emerson and Lettie's oldest child. Bessie younger brother Arnold married Cora Lea Belcher. Daughter of Joseph and Jessie McIntosh Belcher. Cora was is my dad's sister.

1...Bessie Arbula Nutter, born 12 April 1909 in Gatewood, Fayette Co., WV; died 10 May 1993 in Fairlea, Greenbrier Co., WV.
2...Odessie Emma Nutter, born 25 November 1910; died 15 May 1932.
3...Alfonzo Floyd Nutter, born 30 May 1913 in Gatewood, Fayette County,WV. He married Jenie Huffman 14 October 1940. Fonzo said that he was born in his grandmother log cabin between Gatewood and Fayetteville.
4...Tressie Cathrine Nutter, born 18 July 1915 in Miden, West Virginia; died 08 November 1987.
5...Jessie May Nutter, born 10 December 1917. She married (1) Dennis Tyree. She married (2) Ardell Seabolt 24 December 1942.
6...Arnold Foster Nutter, born 26 January 1921 in Quinwood, Greenbrier Co., WV; died 17 July 1996 in Beckley, WV.He married Cora Lea Belcher 30 June 1946, daughter of Joseph Belcher and Jessie McIntosh.
7...Lossie Alma Nutter, born 07 March 1923. She married Clarence Huffman 10 October 1940.
8...Flossie Ann Nutter, born 28 March 1925.
9...James Arthur Nutter, born 12 April 1932.

Bessie Arbula Nutter was born 12 April 1909 in Gatewood, Fayette Co., WV, and died 10 May 1993 in Fairlea, Greenbrier Co., WV. She married James Edward O'Dell 31 October 1927 in Quinwood, Greenbrier Co., WV, son of Cyrus O'Dell and Naoma Childers.

Bessie was born between Gatewood and Oak Hill, near a sawmill where her father worked. Jim hauled coal with horse and wagon for the Margarete Coal Company as a young man. He later delivered groceries for the Company store. Jim and Bessie's youngest daughter, Loretta, is my mom.

THE NUTTER FAMILY

...William Christopher Nutter was the first of this line in America. He migrated from Lancaster, England to the Maryland about 1665. Eventually settling in Somerset County, Maryland in 1672. Christopher died 02 December 1702 in Somerset, MD. He married Mary Dorman 14 March 1663/64 in Northampton, Va.

.....Johnson Floyd Nutter was born 07 April 1862 in Nicholas County,WV, and died 30 April 1921. He married Elbina Katherine Nutter 11 November 1883 in Nicholas Co., WV, daughter of Charles Nutter and Sarah Pitsenbarger.Elbina "Kitt" Nutter said that during the civil war that a detachment of confederate soldiers arrived at her parents home one day. The soldiers took what food and supplies they could find. The officer in charge came in and sat down. Kitt said that they had flour in a cupboard. Flour at this time of the war was very scarce and highly prized. The officer knowing this, placed his chair near the cupbard and kept the flour safe from his men until they finished searching the house. Kitt's father Charles was taken by the confederates at one time. But he had been sick, and they released him to go back home.
