Marines return thanks to New Yorkers

NEW YORK CITY (May 27, 2006) -- Dozens of Marines in town for an annual celebration of the nation’s sea services donated their time May 27 to show gratitude to New Yorkers in Time Square for Marine Day.

The day was a part of Fleet Week and allowed the Marines to display their combat capabilities to the city.

Approximately 150 Marines covered Broadway from 34th to 59th streets to show their appreciation for the support New Yorkers have shown troops during the War on Terror.

The Marines’ main attraction was the Marine Corps martial arts program demonstration, when viewers were invited to participate with the Marines in a sparing match.

“We were able to show them what MCMAP has to offer, as well as the training we go through,” said Staff Sgt. Ector A. Garza, a black belt martial arts instructor with Headquarters Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment.

“It was really fun for me when I got to fight with the Marines,” said 16-year-old Nick Iacoves. “Growing up, I’ve always wanted to be a soldier. Now that I’ve talked to a lot of the Marines, I really want to be a Marine.”

Aside from MCMAP, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing’s band pleased their pedestrian audience with Marine Corps melodies while United Service Organizations entertained sang along.

“It was a fun day overall, but very nerve wracking to be able to show what we do.”
