"Doc" Travis Youngblood was taken from us a year ago tomorrow. He is buried at Arlington next to my son. I met his wife - she has two small children, one he never saw. He was injured and conscious and everyone thought he'd make it, perhaps losing his foot. Some internal injury led to his death on the evac chopper. You may have seen Andre Williams in a video on the A&E special he made for his daughter's birthday, clearly trying to be upbeat for her. He was taken from us a week from tomorrow last year. Chris Dixon was the youngest Marine in Lima. He went through SOI with my Chris. They were close friends and attended the Marine Corps Ball together. My Chris changed clothes at Dixon's house. "Dix" left his parents heartbroken, of course. My son had left his cover over there and Dix's mother mailed it to me not 2 days after my Sarah asked me to mail my Chris' EGA to her at PI. I turned the house upside down looking for it, and her it arrives in the mail. So, Pfc. Sarah carried her EGA to the Emblem Ceremony in her hand and her DI tapped her hand and told her "Chris would be proud." A lot of names next to the date August 3 up there. Anniversaries are either good or bad depending. As I shared with another parent back around Memorial Day, every day is Memorial Day for us. There is a marker at Arlington with two dates on it, the happiest and saddest days of my life. Lima Company deployed with 186. Twenty three didn't come back. |

We will never forget these brave Heroes John.
I echo the comment of Sarah's DI. Chris would indeed be very proud. Even though every day is "Memorial Day" for you, it is wonderful how you find ways to honor Chris' memory every day. You are a shining example of Patriotism at it's best and provide much needed strength to other Gold Star families and all your fellow countrymen. -Pat |

Re: Lima Company 3/25 Casualty List
A year ago today, a little after 3 PM, two Marines rang my doorbell (which broke just after that) and gave me the news a parent fears most in life. It seems like ysterday, and a thousand years ago.
In that year, I have been supported by many friends - including many people here, many strangers, people in the media, politicians, everyone. Thank you all for that. In that year, my two daughters have graduated from high school and enrolled in Ohio State University. One of them, Sarah, has her own thread here, because she too became a United States Marine. The other, Laura, may have a thread here in four years because she signed up for the NROTC program at OSU with the desire to become an officer of Marines. In that year, I have found myself meeting "important people" and being on national TV. I've seen my son on a documentary about his unit. I have thought a LOT about what Life is here for, why I am here and a son so full of promise, love, goodness, and honor, is not. When his best friend, Pfc. Christopher Dixon was killed in May, 2005, in another IED attack on an AAV, I wondered how I would feel had that been my Chris. The feeling has no parallel in life and cannot be explained. In that year, I have met MANY Marines, and each one of them makes me very very proud that my son claimed that title. Each one of you deserves being proud of yourself, your son or daughter, husband, wife, loved one who also claims that title. Once a Marine, always a Marine. If you have read this far and would like to do something, just today sometime be extra kind to someone or tell a loved one you love them, just one extra act of kindness in the memory of my son and his comrades in arms who fell this day, and so many other days in our Nation's past. I would that there be no more such names, but fear there will. Thank you again. Semper Fidelis. http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.d...WS01/608030366 |

Re: Lima Company 3/25 Casualty List
Words can not discribe what that moment felt like nor the past year sadly as time moves along much faster then we would like. I know that you stand tall when you think or speak about your son and how proud you were of him and how proud you are of your daughters.
To have reached out to other family members, friends ( visa versa) both old and new, to internet forums as this takes a person with strong character, because it is I am sure very easy to slip into pity and depression and remove yourself from everyone who wants to step forward and reach out to you. Condolences to you and your family on this day. |

John,
As your year of "firsts" comes to a close, please know that many uphold you and your family in prayer regularly, and especially today. Your words and actions always honor the memories of Chris and his comrades and you inspire all you come in contact with to do the same. God bless you. -Pat |

Re: Lima Company 3/25 Casualty List
John,
Seemingly sterile lists of names mean more to some than others, no doubt. I remember the day that weighs on you and yours, among other days, daily. I operated with 3/25 frequently and often wonder how many of the anonymous faces I remember are on such lists. Rememberance is the highest honor we can pay, and please know that many a Marine pays that honor. I certainly do. |
