Re: Mcrotc
Three things to cover here:
MCJROTC (Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) & Young Marines – these are youth oriented programs built around Marine Corps traditions and principles. They are open to young men and women and have no active duty or reserve obligations of service in the Marine Corps. NROTC (Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps) – This program is run on 60 some odd university and college campuses. There is a Marine Option for cadets in the NROTC program. (2 years NROTC & 2 years MCROTC) The staff is run by naval officers, and there is usually a small Marine staff led by an active duty major. There is usually an obligation for commissioned service (or enlisted service if you fail) after graduation. You are considered in a reserve category with a primary duty of “college student”. NROTC cadets will attend a “Bulldog” session at the Officer Candidate’s School one summer (sometimes also referred to as PLC). During the school year, you will take classes from the NROTC staff on military and naval sciences. You will have to do unit PT and will have to maintain uniforms and physical grooming / appearances. PLC (Platoon Leaders’ Course) – This is one of several courses offered at the Marine Officer Candidate’s School (OCS) at Quantico, VA. PLC comes in two versions based upon where you are in your college career. PLC Jr & Sr are two 6 week sessions that you will take in the summers between the spring and fall semesters. There is also a version of PLC that is, I believe, 10 weeks, that you would take if you didn’t sign up until sometime in your junior year. If you sign up after you graduate, or sometime in your Sr. year, you would go to OCC – Officer Candidate’s Course, which is a little different and ends with a commissioning ceremony. When you sign up for PLC, your obligation is only for the first couple of weeks of the course, then you can quit if it’s not for you. There is a monthly stipend ($$) that is offered, and if you take that, then you are obligated for service – as an officer if you successfully complete both PLC and college, or as an enlisted member if you don’t. While enrolled in PLC, you have no obligations to the Corps during the school year other than to complete your courses (get good grades) and keep yourself physically fit and drug free. You are not obligated to do group PT, make morning formations, or wear your uniforms during the school year. Your OSO might meet with you a couple of times a semester, but generally they will leave you alone. There are plenty of other details on these programs, and I am by far, not an expert on them. For that, talk to an OSO. (Okay - that is my official disclaimer. If you have other questions, please ask.) |

Re: Mcrotc
This basically what you said, correct?
I sign up as a freshman, theyn go to PLC at the end of my freshman year, then again at the end of my junioy year. Or I can sign up as a sophmore the go at the end of the year and again at the end of my junior year. Or I can do PLC-Combined if I sign up as a junior. How does the tuition assiatance go? Is it based on your(your parent's) yearly income? Thanks for the help. Lamm |

Re: Mcrotc
Hammersfist is being too kind... I have a lot of stuff crammed into my brain housing group that does very little to help me earn a paycheck nowadays. Basically, I have a lot of crap in my head, burned there from experiences (just like field stripping an M-16, an M-60, an M-2, or an M-249.
Some of the other shit is at www.ocs.usmc.mil |

Re: Mcrotc
BTW Lamm - go in with open eyes. You can do PLC and take no money from the Corps except while at Quantico. If you take the stipend ($$) during the school year, then you are obligated to service (officer or enlisted). That's okay as long as you are aware. The last thing that you want is to get an unexpected plane ticket after you quit college to take a cool job offer, travel the world, or fail out... Parris Island here you come!
Just know what you are getting in to. |
