Freeport's 333rd Military Police Unit Honored

Freeport, Illinois- While millions remembered the terrible losses of three years ago, closer to home hundreds showed up to honor Freeport's 333rd Military Police Unit for their sacrifices.

It was a day of broad smiles and bear hugs as the men and women of the 333rd were honored with a huge party. It was Freeport's way of saying thank you to the soldiers for their 15 months of duty over in Iraq.

"It's really warming...I made me really proud to be an American," says Platoon Leader Staff Sgt. Tom Maier.

The celebration was filled with patriotic music, food, beer and plenty of speeches from local politicians. But mainly it was about the troops. For some of them this would be the last time they were all together in one spot.

Commanding Officer Captain Ron Bonesz says, "It has been great seeing all the soldiers....just a sense of camaraderie."

Along with the camaraderie it was also a time for the 333rd to say thanks for all the support they received from the homefront while they fought in Iraq.

Mair adds, "It gives you such a warm feeling...to meet all these people who sent you cards and letters while you over there...you just want to say thanks."

Organizers say every 333rd soldier received a $50 savings bond and $100 cash as a gift from the Freeport community.
