Doctor Blames Bike Seats For Sexual Side Effects

BOSTON -- New studies indicate bicycling may pose a serious side effect for men.

"After six or so years of very aggressive riding, I experienced ED, or erectile dysfunction. It was very sudden," said Fred deNapoli, an avid bike rider.

According to Dr. Irwin Goldstein, a sexual health doctor in Boston, cycling caused that sexual side effect.

"It's an official, medical, scientific, problem," Goldstein said. "We believe that in and around 5 percent of men who ride bicycles will endure the problem of moderate to severe erectile dysfunction."

WHDH-TV in Boston reported three recent studies, including one Goldstein led, that show the seat may be to blame. The studies examined people who were sitting on a table or sitting on a stationary bike.

Goldstein said seats that have the bicyclist lean forward means they bear all their weight on the artery that controls blood flow.

"The only time we saw zero blood flow to the penis was when they sat on the bicycle, using a straddle or saddle," he said.

But not everyone agrees.

"The bike seat is not the issue, it's how you sit on it and how the bike seat supports you," said Scott Fader, of Specialized Bicycles.

Bike stores offer a variety of seats that Fader said will offer good support.

"As long as you're fitted, properly fitted on the bicycle, you're going to be solely sitting on the 'sitbones' and you'll have no issues," he said.
