Wolverine90 is

tell me why

Long time reader, first time post.

I just came back for the Vets club talking to some fellow Jarheads about some things I would like some help on....

Why is it that the "average" American knows Babe Ruth, Bill Gates and Mickey Mantle, but only a few know names like Dan Dailey, Smedly Butler and Chesty Puller?

Why is it that everyone knows that where Camden Yards and Disney World are, but no one knows about Belleau Woods, Khe Sahn and Iwo Jima?

Why is it that my 6 year old's best friend knows all the lyrics to every freakin' Hillary Duff song, the difference between a penis and a vagina and what a school teacher can and cannot say to him, but doesn't know that the American Flag should never touch the ground (until yesterday when I saw him dragging one across the floor)?

Are we teaching our kids the wrong things here, or is it just me?

Love to hear what my brothers and sisters think,

Re: tell me why

Just to make you feel a little better Wolverine, in our house the flag is resected by everybody, including my 4 & 6 years olds.

Re: tell me why

Wolverine,

The education system in this country is a shambles. Even if you send your children to a private school there is so much PC that teachers have to watch what they say/teach. History lessons, as one example, are nothing but revisionist BS. Education starts in the home. I taught my sons to respect America and The Flag. From me they learned The Pledge Of Allegiance and proper flag etiquette and the sacrifices that men and women have made for our country. As far as today's kids knowing all the words to lets say a Hillary Duff song, well you really can't blame them because they are bombarded with media hype from everywhere. I'm sure as they grow older that they will be into something/someone else and you'll be pulling your hair out over the next fad that the media is hyping. My boys were no angels by any means, the apples didn't fall to far from the tree as the saying goes, but they are grown men now and they turned out pretty damn good. If you want your son to know about Belleau Woods, Iwo Jima or Khe Sahn teach him yourself because I'll bet that he won't learn about them in any schoolroom.
