Military Trivia
Ground Rules
I'll ask the first question. Whoever answers it correctly gets to ask the next question etc. The questions can be anything related to the military or military operations. Two-part questions are allowed but not two separate questions. We'll start with an easy one... Which German General described the August 8th 1918 Allied offensive as "the Black Day of the German Army"? -Chief Muppet |

Re: Military Trivia
Okay - I'll step up...
General Eric Ludendorff referred to the German defeat at Amiens, France on August 8th, 1918, as "The black day of the German Army." Shortly after sunrise on 8 August, combined allied forces consisting of British, Canadian, and Austrailian toops totalling 9 Divisions advanced through thick fog, behind a rolling barrage of artillery with tanks in support. Due to the fog and the smoke & dust of the artillery barrage, these forces were able to close to within 100 meters of the German positions. The German forces were taken by surprise and fought with intensity for the first minutes of the fight, but coordinated efforts quickly fell away to sporadic fire and a few pockets of stiff resistance. By the middle of the day, the Allied forces had reached their objectives and suffered "minor" casualties (by WWI standards - about 37,000 casualties, as opposed to 74,000 for the Germans). Ludendorff wasn't referring to the loss of men, equipment, territory, or supplies as the "black day", but instead was referring to the wholesale surrender of German units to numerically inferior Allied units. For Ludendorff, this marked the beginning of the end of the German Army in WWI. ![]() |

Re: Military Trivia
Okay, another relatively easy one…
What was the last major warship sunk in combat at sea, and what were the circumstances of its sinking? ![]() |

Re: Military Trivia
I was hoping someone else would jump in with the answer...
It was the HMS Sheffield that was hit by an Argentine exocet missile in the south Atlantic. The sinking ended any chance of a diplomatic solution to solving the dispute over the Falkland Islands between Britain and Argentina. -Chief Muppet |

Re: Military Trivia
You are, of course, correct!
Maybe we should move this to another section of the board. What do you think? |
