Coffee and a book
So, what are you reading? I know that not everyone here is addicted to the mental opium of the TV, so what is the last book you read, and what are you reading now?
I'll start: Last book I read: Fire in the Sky: The Air War in the South Pacific by Eric M. Bergerud - this was an EXTREMELY detailed account of the air war in the South Pacific. Fascinating reading and a superb resource for academic study. Bergerud' study is a classic of historical research and a "standard" for anyone writing about or studying the air war in the Pacific. Not a casual read, but an excellent study. Currently reading: Brave Men, Ernie Pyle Last edited by Vulture6; 10-06-2006 at 10:10 AM. |

Re: Coffee and a book
I read everything that either Steven Coonts or John Snford writes. I am currently re-reading Valhalla rising by Clive Cussler. Since I've decided to start teaching middle school science, I have a feeling my recreational reading is about to go south.

Re: Coffee and a book
Just about finished "The War Above the Trees" written by Ron Carey which is dedicated to the air crews of the 52nd Combat Aviation Battalion and all members of the 4th Infantry Division who paid the ultimate price in the Central Highlands of Vietnam during Operation Wayne Grey.
Ron was the one of the helicopter crew chief's flying over head during Operation Wayne grey which took part in March 1, 1969 - April 14,1969 I was there and wounded during this Operation. Due to the closeness to me of this Operation it has taken me almost 2 years to complete the book. -SSGMIke.Ivy |

Re: Coffee and a book
Last book I read: Brave Men, Ernie Pyle -- a classic that introduces you to the Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen of the Sicily and Italy campaigns, and then to England and into France and to Paris. (Ernie Pyle was a well known war correspondant who followed the American forces through North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and Normandy. After the liberation of Paris, he returned to the States and eventually shipped out to the Pacific. He was killed by a sniper on Ie-Shima island of northwestern Okinawa.) Ernie continues to tell the story of the war by telling the stories of the "GI" - not the campaigns, officers, or heroes... though many of the people he meets are truly heroes. Don't read this book looking for a campaign history. Read it to understand who the American GI was and what they went through, especially those who worked in units outside the infantry.
Currently reading: Beyond Band of Brothers, Dick Winters Last edited by Vulture6; 10-06-2006 at 10:12 AM. |
