Associated Press - An investigation was launched today into an incident where American Soldiers were recorded on the Internet and on email referring to the different various factions in Viet Nam using the derogatory name "gooks". Evidently this term is used to refer both to foreign fighters from North Vietnam and also to South Vietnamese communist freedom fighters. There are also reports of Soldiers and Marines shooting civilians and later claiming that they were suspected NVA. Although weapons were found in the local village, the villagers were not armed. Senator McGovern and Senator Gore have promised a full investigation.

Just so you know, MIT claims to have invented e-mail in 1961, so it was around during Nam. It just wasn't available everywhere. At Air University we were using it in 1970 so we were using it during Nam. And finally, the World Wide Military Command and Control System (WWMCCS) was installed at Major Commands (including PACCOM) in 1972. A large portion of WWMCCS was an e-mail capability, so it was being used by the military during Nam. The closest most of the civilian community had was dial-up bulletin boards where you could post messages for all subscribers to read.
