Wrestling so far (I am screwed)

I wrestled on the 30th of November and won against Pinconning. I pinned the guy in the second period. I went up a weight class because no one was in mine. Then when I went to wrestle Mio he forfeited because he was too scared to wrestle me. Then when I wrestled on December 2nd I got smoked. 1 win 3 losses. It went bad. But now I can get to what I really want to talk about. On Monday in practice I was wrestling a guy. I struggled the wrong way and my knee popped out of place then went back in. I started screaming because it hurt so bad, needless to say I took the rest of the day off. I went to the doctors next day and had x rays done. I tore one of my outer ligaments and now I am out for one to two weeks. I cant even run! This sucks, I was afraid my entire career was over, I suppose one to two weeks to an entire season is better. I have to miss the next tournament now and possibly can't wrestle untill January. AAAAAAAHHHHHHH!

Re: Wrestling so far (I am screwed)

Be careful with your knees Garin. Torn ligaments don't heal, they just sort of float around in space. If it gives you trouble the doc will snip them but then you will be prone to arthritis sooner than you need to be. You don't want your knees to be able to predict the weather in 10 years.

Re: Wrestling so far (I am screwed)

Was it a ligament surrounding the knee or the cartlidge within the knee that wasis damage? Depending on which one/set it was, depends on your prognosis.

Re: Wrestling so far (I am screwed)

You can't live your life wrapped in bubble wrap trying to stay safe. Follow the Dr's orders, go through a full recovery, and keep doing what you're doing. DON'T short change your recovery and try to get back sooner... that's just asking for trouble.

I wrestled in high school and college -- finished two seasons on crutches and one (my last) in a neck brace. Shit happens, and it could just as easily happen in a car wreck or slipping on ice walking out of the school.

Re: Wrestling so far (I am screwed)

I wrestled in High School, the AAU, the olympic trials and coached high school wrestling. I also have arthitic knees, and ankles. You're not a professional athlete, so do exactly what your doctor orders. Pros need to get back quick because they earn their living doing what they do. If your Dr says you need to stay out for one to two weeks, stay out for one to rwo weeks. There are varying degrees of ligament tears. If you'll be good to go in one or two weeks, I would assume this is a minor tear (and I know it didn't feel minor, but most of your immediate pain was due to the dislocation, not the tear), but I would invest in a soft brace, or an ace bandage if I was going to continue with wrestling and cross-country.

Re: Wrestling so far (I am screwed)

I you tore a ligament, perhaps the medial collateral (MCL), indeed it will not heal. You knee will get to feeling better but will be "loose" unless surgically repaired. This is major surgery, not athroscopic. My daughter had an ACL reconstruction with meniscus damage. It wasn't pretty. Rehab is long and tough and her knees still bother her on runs. She has not been able to attempt the Marine PFT. She's still doing therapy on it.

Generally, it takes an MRI to be reasonably certain of the diagnosis, and this doesn't often show meniscus damage. X-rays often don't show much detail on soft tissue.

Indeed, you seriously need to follow doctor's reccos and ensure you are seeing an orthopedic surgeon or sports medicene specialist. This can be more than just a month or two out of high school - it can impact the rest of your life.

Re: Wrestling so far (I am screwed)

Today the knee is feeling great. My medial collateral was sprained and my doc said to be out of contact sports for a week at least. I see my orthipedic doctor on Wednesday and I am pretty sure he is going to release me back into wrestling. It really isn't that big a deal anymore, it was just hurting that day and you know how things hurt the day afterward. Everything's fine, thanks for the concern.

Re: Wrestling so far (I am screwed)

Listen to the Corpsmen. Heh. Drink water.

Good to go.

Remember the acronym RICE - Rest Ice Compression Elevation .

Ice lessens the swelling, which is an impediment to healing.

I blew out an ankle in bball in 12th grade and they resorted to the needle to pull the swelling out of the affected area. That was not fun, but it worked.
